School. The word itself sounded depressing. You could be smiling one moment and then someone would bring it up and the smiling would stop. It was dramatic, yes, but who wanted to spend thirty hours of their week trapped in a building full of old, menopausal, pregnant, dramatic or overjoyed teachers and hormonal teenagers?
If someone ever were to ask me that question, I would turn around, stare them dead in the eye and said it sounded like pure torture.
It would be even more torturous with siblings. They should have made a law that every sibling must go to a different school because I already knew Luke would have talked to Hayden and made sure he breathed down the back of my neck every second I wasn't in a classroom.
I sighed to myself and looked over myself in the mirror. I had tied my hair up into a ponytail, nothing special. I put a pair of small, silver hoop earrings in my ears and I had put a little bit of makeup on, mainly so Luke wouldn't notice that I had any on at all but also because I didn't want to look like I was trying too hard.
My outfit consisted of a grey turtle neck which was tucked into my blue jeans. I was also wearing a pair of black socks and black converse shoes. Again, it was nothing special but it kept me warm and that's all I needed really.
I grabbed my bag and swung it over my shoulder, before I made my way out of my room and downstairs. I walked into the kitchen and was surprised to see that most of my brothers were actually awake and creating chaos in the kitchen.
"Morning, Em." Luke sighed as he followed in behind me. He planted a kiss on my forehead, before he walked over to the twins and Mason, who were fighting over the last of the milk.
Jaxon was trying to do, what looked like, last minute homework and at the same time was yelling at Connor, who was getting crumbs on his work, from where he was looking over Jaxon's shoulder.
My eyebrow raised in amusement but I didn't say anything. I went over to the table and sat opposite Jaxon, who hadn't even noticed my presence because he was in such a heated argument.
I jumped when a hand came out of nowhere and set a piece of toast down on the space in front of me. My eyes looked up and I found Luke staring down at me, the look in his eyes almost daring me to protest and see what happens.
"Thanks." I mumbled and gave him a sheepish smile. I waited for him to go away but he just stood there, his arms folded over his as he waited for me to take a bite.
I mumbled a bunch of nonsense under my breath but picked up the slice and took a huge bite out of it, just to satisfy him, so he could go back to sorting out the arguments between the other boys.
The house shockingly felt empty without my dad, Sandy and Parker's presences. The tension also seemed to have increased between everyone since our dad had gone on his business trip.
Sandy wasn't sure when she would be back as her mom seemed to be getting better and then worse at sudden times. I felt really bad for her and I hoped that her mother would get better soon; I also felt really bad for Parker as he was still so young but Sandy said he was only confused of what was going on in the world around him.
On the other hand, my dad was desperately trying to get back for Friday afternoon, so he could be there to go to court on Saturday morning. I would have to go too, to prove why my mom and Daniel shouldn't have custody over us.
"Emily, is it okay if you catch a ride with Alexander and Hayden's friends?" Luke asked me, drawing me out of my thoughts and I nodded my head yes. "I would've taken you myself but I have to get to work earlier today." He told me and I nodded again, reassuring him that it was fine and I didn't mind. "Jaxon will pick you up after school too." He added.
