(Inspiration from Wishful Thinking by OwlsWithFins and the scene in Half Blood Prince when Hermione is crying on the steps with Harry.)

The party after the Quidditch Match was legendary. It was so loud you could barely here yourself think. Everyone was celebrating except for 2 people. Ron had started snogging Lavender in a rather revolting way but people were cheering nevertheless. Hermione spotted this and felt happy for him when she spotted something. A mop of messy black hair had darted out of the portrait hole and Hermione knew it was Harry. However, just as she made her way out, she saw Ginny also sharing a steamy lip lock with Dean. Hot tears threatened to spill out of her eyes as she made a run for it, following Harry.

She eventually found Harry in an empty classroom, sitting on the desk looking away from her.

"Harry?"

She slowly walked up to him and sat next to him, putting an arm around his shoulders.

Harry felt her warm arm around him and tried not to start sobbing. He had like Ron for ages, since his third year even though he had only realized it the end of last year. His soft Ginger locks and those bright blue eyes. Ron had been the first person not to treat him differently for his fame. He didn't use him. He was always there for him. They shared jokes and a passion for Quidditch. They could fail Potions together and talk about how much they wanted to kill Draco for calling Hermione a Mudblood all the time. He had wanted to tell him but then he was afraid that he would lose Hermione. He was sure she liked him and couldn't bring himself to do it, Hermione being the older sister he never had. But then seeing Ron kissing Lavender broke his heart in a way he couldn't imagine.

Hermione hugged Harry with one arm as she felt him curve into her. Ginny was everything Hermione had wished for. The first female friend who'd opened up to her and made her talk. They were close. When she told her parents she fancied girls, they said they were happy she had accepted herself and that they just wanted her to meet her Prince Charming or in her case, Princess Charming. Ginny was what she had been waiting for but she didn't want to lose her best friend. Harry liked Ginny, he had to but that meant she couldn't do anything and Hermione was prepared to sacrifice her one true love to keep both Harry and Ginny happy.

"What's wrong Harry?"

"It's nothing, I just-" he couldn't speak, "Who are you taking to the Christmas party?"

"Oh, I don't know yet, I don't have the guts to ask the person I want to. So much for being in Gryffindor. "

"I'm in the same boat. who do you want to ask?"

Hermione was stumped. She didn't want but she had to eventually.

"I'm sure he'd love to go with you,"

It's now or never she thought.

"How do you know it's a he?"

It was Harry's turn to be stumped. Hermione didn't like Ron. He lightened up a bit then realised he had been quiet for too long.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to assume anything, that's great Hermione, I'm glad you told me."

"Well, I gave you a clue so..."

Harry sighed,

"Mine's a he too"

"Wow ok," Harry didn't like Ginny," what about you and Cho, you used to have a massive crush."

"That's all it was, a crush, it was never serious, and what about you and Krum,"

"Same as you, we realised we were better as friends, he's my pen pal now, that's why we write so much, he made me realise who I actually liked."

Harry decided to go for it

"Hermione, who do you like?" Her heart stopped.

"Only if you tell me,"

"Okay, on 3, 1, 2, 3"

"Ginny"

"Ron"

Time stopped.

"You're joking, you are aren't you," Hermione exclaimed.

The two started laughing, not knowing why.

"I didn't want to say anything because I thought you liked Ron," Harry said.

"And I thought you liked Ginny. Well, I guess we're in the same boat now eh."

"Want a matching scar?"

"I think I'll pass".

The two sat there for a moment.

"I can't believe we've fallen for the Opposite Weasley."

They continued to sit there, Hermione's arm around Harry's shoulders and Harry's arm around Hermione's waist. She idly conjured up a flock of birds and Harry marvelled at the ease of which she did so.

Hermione spoke first.

"We're hopeless, both of them are with someone else."

She felt Harry shift.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to remind you,"

"No it's-"

But at that moment Ron  burst in Lavender behind him, she looked at Harry and Hermione and said

"Come on Won Won, this one's taken."

Harry felt more tears pooling in his eyes when Hermione stood up, so furious, Harry could practically hear her blood boiling.

"You ruined everything!" She shrieked then yelled, "Oppugno"

The birds flew like darts, attacking him as he ran out.

Hermione sat back down hugging Harry as he sobbed feeling her shirt soak from his tears.
