Education is the single most effective commodity that can differentiate living creatures in their entirety. So powerful it is deemed that whenever a war over a kingdom occurred in any part of the world be it European churches or Chinese emperors, the very first thing the new king would do was to burn every single piece of a written document. Many of the great scientists and mathematicians and philosophers have been punished severely for writing their thoughts and findings.
The most commonly burned pages were those covered with numerous scientific and revolutionary ideas. The knowledge that they gave us, the study they conducted, the hardships they faced has today enabled us to use technology such as satellite communication, digital maps that allow for deliveries and transportation. Every single thing you can look around you, if you break it down to its origins you will find just how much academic, political or social trouble the story of its origin carries.
Every morning our phones tell us the weather and temperature. This is possible due to geo satellites launched into space. The origin of this is way older than you might think. Let's go back in time, imagine a city almost 500 years ago in northern Poland. Churches are extremely popular and people are unaware of the truth about the cosmos or anything beyond Earth in general.
Every word of the bible is taken seriously and it acts as the rulebook for citizens. One man named Nicolaus Copernicus has an idea that he wishes to propose to the world, he is however scared that he will be punished by the churches for his supposedly blasphemous idea. The scared Copernicus finally publishes his theory in 1543, the same year he died. He had formulated the theory in 1510 though.
What Copernicus had just published was the heliocentric model of the universe. This model positioned the Sun at the center of the Universe, motionless, with Earth and the other planets orbiting around it in circular paths, modified by epicycles, and at uniform speeds.
This was game-changing and the churches were actively trying to suppress the published book now. So much for their good luck that not even 50 years passed that another reluctant cosmologist was now creating trouble with his written works further developing on the model proposed by Copernicus.
This man was named Giordano Bruno, an Italian cosmologist who also believed that the sun was in the center of the solar system and the Earth revolved around it. In 1593 he was tried for heresy by the Roman Inquisition on charges of denial of several core Catholic doctrines, including eternal damnation, the Trinity, the divinity of Christ, the virginity of Mary, and transubstantiation. He was burned alive in 1600 at the stake in Rome.
The church could not catch a break as another man with a curious brain started writing about his thoughts and findings of the Earth and the solar system. This man was Galileo Galilei and he also stated that Earth orbits the sun and not the opposite. He was sentenced to life imprisonment by the roman catholic church in 1633. He died in 1642 under house arrest.
So, this is the origin story of man's discovery and research of outer space and we can see how the people who proposed these theories and claims were treated. This hints towards a very wicked side of human nature, when humans have the authority or rather decision-making abilities for others things might go out of hand. Some might argue that it is required to maintain stability and order but to what limit must order be maintained if individuality and any hope for better change or new findings are prohibited in the name of maintaining the status quo.
Why did I tell you about these three men? Well to give you an idea of how much struggle and life loss the knowledge and people carrying that knowledge had to go through before it could be used for helping people on a large scale. So, from now on when you check the weather or look at satellite maps for navigation or use any media sharing platform that works on satellite-based communication or order food or perform a bank transaction just think about what the people who discovered the basic ideas behind all these technological advancements had to go through and why education is scary and empowering.
