May or may not be a warning: this chapter has over 14,000 words :) Good luck my roses. I missed you guys. Also read the end of my author note pls, I have a genuine question I'm asking for a future plot in this book.
Andrea pov
I take a sip out of my Jack, loving the feeling of the liquor when it touches the inside of my mouth and then when it goes down my throat. Matteo comes up to me, while drying some glasses with a rag.
"Was that your brother?" He asked me. I nodded at the bartender who's in his early, maybe mid, twenties. "Twin brother." I corrected.
"Figured. You guys look alike. And he doesn't look much older than you."
"Yeah, he's the older twin though. Now that it matters to me. But he likes to occasionally rub it in my face." Matteo laughed. "Yeah I'm a twin too. I'm the younger one and my brother always brings up the fact that he was born 4 minutes before me." Matteo rolled his eyes.
"Augh relatable. Armani is only 17 minutes older than me and he acts like he's so much older than me."
"Felt that. So are you Andrea? Massimo said something about you two moving to Sicily from Chicago?" I hummed and twirled my drinking glass around. "Yes, Chicago. Mine and Armani's birth giver recently died, so we moved here to live with our... sperm donor and brothers." I said hesitantly. I still feel weird calling him dad or whatever. And I don't want to give out any names that might trace back to Alessandro and the mafia.
"I'm guessing you don't have a good relationship with your parents with the way you're calling them birth giver and sperm donor." I shrugged. "Me and my twin didn't have a good relationship with our mother." I cringed.
"And as for the man who helped create us, well we didn't even know he existed until a little over a week ago." I told him. Matteo smacked his lips together. "Damn. Deadbeat dad, huh?" I nodded and took small sips of my drink.
"Yup. But enough about me, what's your family like?" I asked, putting down my drink. Matteo smiled softly as soon as I asked.
"Well I have a twin brother, as you already know. Our dad died when we were toddlers so our mom raised us. She's amazing but she dealt with depression for a while after our dad died. She said that we're the only ones that kept her fighting to stay alive all these years. I have an uncle, but he hates us." Matteo awkwardly dropped the last few words to a mumble. "We used to have a hamster, but he died too." He frowned.
"Hamster name?"
"Hamy." I laughed. "Real creative." I remarked, my head on my chin.
"Thank you, it was my idea. Granted, I was like 6 when I named it but still really good."
"Did your mom and dad have a good relationship?" I asked. Matteo smiled fondly. "Yeah, they have known each other since childhood. My dad was the only one who respected my mom and believed in her dreams. She wanted to be a doctor."
"Did she end up becoming one?" Matteo nodded. "Of course she did. From what I heard, she dominated the entire hospital she worked at. She was one of very few female doctors that worked there at the time. And she was the best doctor they had too." I smiled and listened intently as Matteo happily talked about his mom.
I'm happy some people have good relationships with their parents. Imagine how fucked up the world would be if we all had mommy and daddy issues.
"My dad was a private investigator and worked for some shady people. He got diagnosed with cancer and tried fighting it for years, but eventually died." Matteo said sadly.
"My brother is in college right now, studying business or something similar to that major."
"Are you in college?" I asked. Matteo looked at me like I said the most offending thing ever. "Hell no. My education stopped after high school. Going to college was never in my plan. Okay, scratch that. I don't have a plan. But I just know I didn't want to pursue my education."
