ONCE UPON A TIME, there was a land far far away where a young mermaid traded in her tail for legs. You had loved the human world for as long as you could remember, collecting the trinkets that fell from sunken ships, listening to your mother as she told you tales of the days where humans and merfolk got along. But after your mother died, a result of fishermen hunting your kind, your father, the king of the seven seas, banned your people from ever coming into contact with humans and their culture ever again.

That didn't stop your curious nature, of course. You loved the world above the water. And, when you saw a handsome man take a swim, nearly drowning after he got his foot stuck in seaweed, you knew that you couldn't be an innocent bystander any longer. You had to save him, and you did.

It was from that moment forward that you decided that you would join the human world. You had to chase your dreams, chase your desires. And, when a sea witch said that she would turn your tail into legs in exchange for your voice, you jumped at the opportunity. The only condition? You could never go too far from the sea, or else your legs would turn back into a tail and, without access to water, you'd soon die. But you didn't care about that, you just wanted your legs.

And that was how you ended up washed up on the beach with only your sea-shell bra to cover you. Someone, the man you'd saved, was also on the beach. He was staring out at the ocean when you washed up on the shore, going down to you, pulling you from the water. Once he was sure that you were okay, he searched the beach, finding a ripped sail, deciding that that would be good enough to cover you. He brought it over, wrapping it around your body.

"You okay?" he asked.

You tried to speak, but no words came out. So, instead, you only nodded your head.

"Oh, can you not talk?" he asked. You shook your head. "That's okay, we can try to figure this out. Do you have any family I can take you to? Any friends?"

You shook your head.

"Hmm, well that's a bit of a predicament." He stroked his beard, thinking. "Well, I don't think my advisors would be happy about this, but...C'mon, you can come with me to the palace? If you'd like? It's alright to say no, I can figure something else out. Oh, and my name's Ari, by the way."

You nodded, pointing to him, to show that you didn't mind going with him. He seemed kind. He had helped you after all when he could've left you alone.
