ONCE UPON A TIME, there was a land far far away where a man named James "Bucky" Barnes, more commonly known as the Winter Soldier lived. Though he was a person, he was not treated as such. No, he had a handler, a man named Alexander Pierce, who controlled Bucky's every action. He, alongside his colleagues Brock Rumlow and Jack Rollins, forced Bucky to commit the most horrible acts. They said it was in the name of creating a better future. Bucky wasn't convinced, but he knew better than to question them.
The last time he questioned them, it hadn't ended well. They had locked him in the cold, dreary basement for more days than Bucky could keep track of. When he was finally allowed out, the number of unspeakable acts he was forced to commit increased sevenfold.
He had no agency, no free will. They had stripped that from him, made him a puppet where only they could pull the strings. But he longed for the day where he could break free. Where he could run away and be whoever he wanted. He'd like to be an average man. One time, on a mission, he'd seen a fruit stand and saw some people buying something called plums. When he finally breaks free, he'd like to know what plums taste like.
It was a sad thing to dream of and he knew it, but sometimes it was the only thing that got him through the day.
Now, though, he had a new dream. He had overheard Rumlow and Rollins talking about a ball the princess was throwing. Apparently, she was to be married but had yet to find a suitor. So, her father the king was inviting every eligible bachelor in the land to come, in the hopes that one of them may be the princess's groom.
"Am I to go?" Bucky asked, his voice scratchy from lack of use.
Rumlow sneered at him. "Why the fuck would you go?"
"All eligible—"
"What? You think the princess would want to marry you? A pathetic, spineless bastard?" Rollins laughed. "The princess needs a strong man with a firm hand. You wouldn't be able to handle her."
"Besides do you even think Pierce would let you go?" Rumlow scoffed. "You're lucky he even lets you live. What makes you think he'd be so gracious as to let you go?"
"I wouldn't." Pierce entered the room, giving Bucky a harsh stare. "You will stay here."
"But I don't wish to marry the princess. I just wish—"
