I hate school, not because I’m stupid or have bad grades but because I don’t people. I am the most socially awkward person I know and it does not help me at all. The only public school I am allowed to go to is Saint Florence high school and even that is very close to a private school. At first I went to Holy Cross Private academy for the gifted because Dad wanted one us to go to the school that he graduated from and I am the only one who qualified. But after the accident and with some help from Katie I was able to convince him to let me go to public school. Even though Saint Florence is one step away from being a private school with uniforms and dorm rooms I still prefer it to Holy Cross. Mainly because at Holy cross I had a bunch of rich kids who hated me for being smarter than them that were in the room’s right next to mine. But at Saint Florence they don’t try desperately to get perfect grades to impress their parents and they don’t care if I’m smart, in fact they don’t care about me at all. This means I can be socially awkward and no one will attack me because of it, and that’s just fine by me.
I always get a ride to school with Katie or just walk to school. “Hey, are you riding with me today? Cuz I have a track meeting today so I have to be at school early. Why they have the meet before school is beyond me but that is beside the point. So ride yay or nay?” I looked at her and weighed my options: ride and get there early, or walk in rain and get the flu…
“I’ll ride with you; Dad wants me to do some extracurricular stuff anyway.” I grabbed my backpack and gave Wadsworth what’s left of my breakfast and follow Katie out to her car.
“You know you don’t have to do this…he’s going to work you to death.” Katie says as we get in her car.
I smile and wave it off. “What else am I supposed to do? It’s not like I have a thriving social life. Besides I don’t think they have much left that I can do, by next year I will have completed all of my needed classes and will be able to take something fun like art or psycology.” She smiles slightly in the corners of her mouth and sighs.
“You are one weird kid you know that?” she ruffles my immaculate hair and laughs at me the rest of the way to school as I try to fix it.
When we get there we say our goodbyes and I run into the building trying desperately to avoid the rain. I then walk purposefully into the office and start talking to my councilor about any extracurricular classes or programs I can take and she laughs. “The only thing that you haven’t done is tutoring, other than that you have done everything that we could possibly throw at you.” She hands me all the information she has about tutoring. “We can start you off today if you like. There is an opening during seventh period.” She looked at me waiting for an answer.
“Sure who am I tutoring?” She looked down at the stack of papers on her desk and started to rile through the papers on her desk. But after a while she gave up with a huff.
“I don’t know but make sure to show on time.” She started to go through the papers on her desk again and I left the room.
The rest of my day went by in a blur of lectures, notes, and assignments. But when the end of sixth hour rolled around I almost forgot about tutoring. When the bell rang I rushed to the room on the papers for tutoring. When I finally found it I was three minutes late as I opened the door recognition of who was in the room hit me like a brick wall. “Oh…umm h..hi Blain.” Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea after all.
