~Blain~

I woke up to a clap of thunder and howling rain. I carefully got up and walked to the door, with one last glance at Max I stepped out of the room. As I walked down the hallway I noticed something off about this house, like the walls themselves are trying to hide something. Something powerful; But as I turned a corner I saw the butler walking towards me. He held his finger up to his lips and ushered me in the direction of a large set of double doors. I complied and entered the room, waiting for the Butler to follow. After a minute or so I listened at the door for any signs of him.

"Are you leaving sir?" I heard the butler say through the door. I paused as my vision got sharper and my ears no longer strained to hear the voices in the hall.

"Yes I have a... meeting, to attend to. I will be gone for three weeks so i'm putting you in charge of the household until I return. I...." I heard a pause in the conversation, sniff sniff. "What is that smell? It smells of Lycan..." I froze he can smell me? Wait, how does he know what a Lycan is in the first place?

"Oh, um that must be  coming from the windows sir  I had them open and there are rumors of a roaming pack in the area, I will have security check on that immediately." I waited for, well anything really, anything to signify what was going on.

"See to it that you do..." I released the breath that I didn't know I was holding. I walked away from the door and tried to rub some warmth into my limbs. Why is it so cold in this house? I jumped as the Butler walked into the room.

"Its fine it's just me." He said with a weak smile "Here take this," He handed me a small, ancient looking necklace. It was beautifully crafted in the shape of a crescent moon made out of a beautiful gem that almost looked like ice. As I took it I noticed it was cold to the touch. What is this?

"It is a pendant from one of the oldest clans of your kind. It will serve it's purpose in time but for now please keep it with you. Consider it a gift." He smiled as I put it on. And as soon as I did the room got colder. I looked at the old man with a dumbfounded curiosity.

"Why are you doing this? Who are you?" His smiled faded and a pained look crossed his face. He tried to hide it but I saw the face of someone that had lost to much. He regained his composer and continued.

"I am just the butler; my name is Wadsworth and I live to serve." He fidgeted slightly and walked over to the door.

"No, who are you really?" He turned around nervously. "I know your not human, I can smell the wood on you." He sat back down defeated.

"I used to be able to hide it, but I am growing weaker with age and being away from the wood. I am Iorthonor, the last of the great wood elves. My people were once the great defenders of nature but then there was the corruption." I looked down at the necklace as it started to glow and the world started to fade out. "Here, let me show you."

I looked around and saw an Elvin man with deep brown eyes and spiked white hair as he smiled and laughed at something.  "This is my Torben, right before it reached our village. In human history it was called the black plague but it was much more than a disease. It was a darkness that crept into your body and devoured your soul. The humans merely succumbed to it and died, for they had given up their magic. They forsook the gods of old weakening their abilities to fight the darkness. We had no idea that it was coming." I saw him running around and playing with a little Elvin girl with similar features to him.

"That day was one of our holidays so I was at home with my Torben and our daughter Naniel. Oh she was over joyed that her Atar and Amil were able to play with her the hole day." I paused confused by the meaning of these foreign words. He looked at me with a knowing expression. "Father and Mother" He said in explanation. But that posed another question.

"Did you adopt her?" I asked with a confused expression. I watched his face as a pitying look overtook it. He shook his head slowly.

"No, creatures of the fey do not have the same biological rules than those of man. If a male of fey blood wishes  then they can receive child regardless. Their body will accommodate to its needs. And then when the child is ready then the child will be birthed through the navel. Torben was so happy the day she was born, he didn't care that it almost killed him, he just cared about our little girl." He smiled, and for a moment looked truly happy. Then his face darkened and I was thrust into his memories once again.

I watched as a Elvin man in battle armor came up to him and whispered something in his ear. He stiffened and before he could utter a word there was a scream. It was unlike anything I have ever heard in my life. It sounded like the scream of a dying creature mixed with rage and hate. As everyone looked to the direction of the scream an Elvin woman in battle armor came running out of the under brush with a heavily bleeding wound on her arm.

"The corrupted have found us!" Those were the last words she spoke as an Elvin man flew out of the bushes and proceeded to tear her throat   out with his teeth. As he looked up I could tell that the original inhabitant of that body was gone. His eyes were black pits, his teeth sharp needles, and the horrible hissing sound that emanated from his mouth was the purest sound of hate that I have ever heard.

As he rose from the woman he prepared to run but Iorthonor was faster. He quickly sent an arrow flying and I watched as it embedded itself into the mans chest. He quickly ordered everyone to enter the Village and seal the gates.

He turned to Torben and Naniel and told them to return to the house and hide in the attic. He kissed both of them goodbye and rushed off towards the fighting. As he entered the clearing he let loose arrow after arrow slaying the corrupted monsters until he and his companions  had cleared them off. He ran to them to check if they were hurt.

"So you won?'' I asked.

"Well we thought that we had, until we returned home." His eyes turned sad as I refocused on his memory. He was walking until they saw the smoke, then they all broke out into a run. As they reached the gates to their horror the gates were ajar. The Village was in a state of complete chaos, the guard was all but dead now and the corrupt were running rampant slaughtering the villagers with reckless abandon. They cut a path to the center of town and formed a circle around the remaining villagers.

"We fought as valiantly as we could, protecting and guiding the villagers to the temple. For the corrupt could not walk on holy ground. As we gathered the last of the villagers I began looking for my family. And that is when I hear it, the cry of pain that sent my blood cold, the cry of my husband. I ran towards our home and as I reached it I burst through the door. And there slumped on the floor was my Torben, with a dark pool spreading out from under him. A cry escaped me as I knelt down besides my sweet sweet Torben. I called out his name and to my surprise he was still alive. He smiled at me as he reached up and touched my face. He told me to be strong for our daughter and that no matter what he loved me, no matter what his family said he would not have given any of the life he had with me up. With his last breath he said that he loved me. I wanted to cry but I could not I had to find our daughter. I called out for her over and over but I gained no response, I tore that house apart screaming her name until the others came they tried to console me and that is when I broke down. That was the last day of my life I was ever truly happy. After that day I wandered looking for a purpose for Elves cannot just die, we must be killed. Until one day I found a young werewolf woman carrying a baby through the snow. That is when I realized my purpose to destroy this plague, for the same thing had happened to her." He looked out the window saddened but determined.

"Why are you telling me this?" I asked confused and saddened by the old Elf's story.

"Because soon that same evil will strike again and I need you to protect Maximilian with your life. Will you promise me this?" I nodded before the rest of my mind realized what happened.

"Good, and thank you for listening to the rambling of an old elf, now return to your beloved." I froze and a look of amusement crossed his face.

"How do you know about that?" I asked not sure how to feel.

"I can see it in your eyes, when  fey are mated you can tell in their eyes," He winked at me " don't worry your secret is safe with me." I thanked him and left the room. As I walked down the hall back to Max I wondered what the old Elf meant by this necklace meeting its purpose in time. I entered the room and sat down besides Max as he began to stir. He sat up confused and I brushed the hair out of his eyes on impulse.

"Morning sleepyhead."
