The next round.

I walk out of my tent slowly, not looking forward to the next task. Roma's voice rings out as she says "Magnolia, Alisa, Katine, and Jamie. Congratulations on being the last four demigods. You have all brought great honor to your camps." I roll my eyes at her words, the only honor to be had goes to the winner of this contest.

Roma claps her hands, looking gleeful as she says "Follow me." She leads us to the arena, but it looks nothing like the arena I've grown accustomed to seeing. My eyes widen when I realize it's a dueling arena. I tune out the rest of Roma's words, only listening long enough to hear the rules -the first one to get out of the ring loses- and who my opponent is -Jamie.

I turn to look at her, already grimacing inwardly. I've watched Jamie at camp when she's training or during war games, and she's good. Really good, which means my chances of winning are a lot smaller than I'd like. I touch my daggers nervously, I'm good with them, but the obvious advantage is with Jamie. I'll have to be quick in order to win.

A wry smile touches my lips. At least my small build helps with something. I watch Magnolia and Alisa's fight with detached interest, focusing on ways to win. I glance over at Jamie, who seems unconcerned, although I'm certain she's sizing me up the same way I did her.  Eventually, Roma calls the two of us up, and I straighten as I walk into the ring, pulling out both daggers.

I force myself to relax, but not so much that my movements will be slow. I watch Jamie carefully, waiting for her to make the first move. She does, and I quickly move to the side, taking a chance and attempting to push her out of the ring. I don't succeed, and Jamie reacts quickly, slamming the side of my leg with her sword and I fall, careful to twist so I'm still inside the circle. After a second, I mime a throwing motion with one of my daggers and Jamie turns slightly.

Taking advantage of her momentary distraction I stand back up and move to the side again as she comes towards me, my arm flying up in an involuntary attempt to fend her off. Sunlight catches on the flat of my dagger, and I notice Alisa wince.

Getting an idea, I move backward another step, and then twist my dagger so sunlight shines directly into Jamie's eyes and then quickly shove her out of the circle. Roma nods and claps her hands again, announcing me as winner, but I don't say anything. I consider going over and apologizing to Jamie for using such an underhanded trick, but I don't. Instead I shake my head and promise myself not to pull a stunt like that again, if I even make it to the next round.
