Alisa
I looked around at all the remaining demigods and smiled. Five demigods were gone, and none of the five were my allies. Good, I thought. The fewer demigods that aren’t my allies around, the better. With five of the demigods gone, it meant that I had a better chance of winning this competition.
When the lady in white told us that we would be able to use weapons for this task, I almost cheered out loud. I was glad I was going to be able to use my Imperial Gold sword once more. My sword was like another appendage on my body. Without it, I felt like I was missing an arm or a leg.
Despite being happy about being able to use my sword again, I got worried when our guide told us that we would have to face our worst fear in this challenge. I didn’t have many fears, but the fears that I did have were awful ones. My fears made me shake in terror when I thought about them too much. Even though my fears were intense ones, I knew how to control them. Even though I had my fears were one of my fatal flaws, I knew how to keep them under control.
The woman in white said that we would go into the arena, one by one, and face our worst fear, literally. Unlike our last event, where I was last to go into the arena, my name was called first. “Alisa, it is now time for you to face your worst fear,” our guide said. I took a deep breath, then entered the arena.
When I got into the arena, the first thing I saw was a siren. I knew that it wasn’t any ordinary siren, either. When this siren began to sing, it would send me into a hallucination of my worst fear. Before I had a chance to mentally prepare myself, the siren began singing.
In an instant, I found myself inside of a small, glass box. The box was so small that I was curled up into a ball in order to fit in it. There were no cracks or spaces in the box, so there was no way for fresh air to enter the box.
All of a sudden, the box began to fill up with snow. I had no idea where the snow was coming from, but it was filling the box up very quickly. My breaths became short and raspy, and I began to panic. I was claustrophobic, and I remembered what had happened to make me fear tight spaces.
One winter when I was about five or six years old, I went to my cousin’s house for Christmas vacation. My cousin and her family lived in South Dakota, a place where the winters were harsh, cold, and full of snow.
One day, my cousin and I decided to go outside and play on the big snow pile outside of her house. After we got tired of climbing to the top of the pile and sliding down again and again, my cousin said, “Hey, let’s dig a tunnel through the bottom of the snow pile!”
“Yeah, that’ll be fun!” I eagerly agreed. We began digging through the bottom of the pile with our gloved hands. After a while, we had a nice little tunnel that went about a third of the way through the whole snow pile.
