War Dog

Flossie, I never knew you,

You died before I was born.

But the tale's handed down in our family

How you helped them to weather the storm.

The bombing, the blitz and the air raids,

Had people frightened and fraught.

Floss, you kept them calm in the shelter,

Gave a hundred per cent doggy support.

More than that, you sussed enemy aircraft,

Barking before Minnie's wail.

You let them all know when the time came to go,

With a cheerful wag of your tail.

At the end of the war, celebration,

Your people alive still, and well.

That very same day you died happy,

Leaving them with your story to tell.

If you'd a message to give to us now,

Faithful Floss, no doubt as to what it would be.

We can see, 'cos they wrote on your photo,

You'd say simply,

Yours truly,

Flossie.
