It was Friday aka my sixteenth birthday! Although things weren't so great for a while things were finally starting to look good again! I woke up to a bunch of texts in the group chat and a group Facetime call with my best friends, my mom and dad made me a huge breakfast and got me pink balloons that said "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" and tonight was the dance! No, it wasn't A Night in Paris themed but it was a dance and an excuse to get all dressed up!
Immediately after school the girls and I, including a group of parent volunteers, began setting up. I felt like I missed out on so much! They got rid of the live band in exchange for a group of photographers who were paid to act as paparazzi to take pictures of students on the red carpet. The menu was very bougie. I'm talking tiny snacks that wouldn't even get you full! But I will admit, the decorations were really nice!
After an hour of working, a group of Lucia's popular friends came into the gymnasium.
"Oh great! You made it!" Lucia cheered.
I looked to Tara and Ahni with a confused look on my face.
"We had to get a bigger set up crew since you kept bailing on us and leaving everyone to do the work!" Lucia sassed. "Too busy whining over the fact that your little Paris theme didn't win, huh?"
I didn't say anything, I didn't even give her the slightest reaction. I just walked away like she always does.
"Kaia, you and your friends should leave, we'll handle the rest!" Lucia called out.
"Why? So you can take the credit for this dance?" Tara asked.
"Even though we did most of the planning?" Ahni added.
"Look around sweetheart, everything here is because of me and my friends, so like I said. You can leave, we'll handle the rest!" Lucia sassed.
Kaia, Tara and Ahni walked over to me.
"She basically took over this whole thing, so let's just go," I said sounding defeated. I looked over to Lucia who had a big fat grin on her face.
I rolled my eyes.
"At least we have more time to get ready!" Kaia whispered. We all squealed and gave each other fist bumps as we left the gymnasium.
It took Luca a good seven minutes to pick us up after Kaia texted him for a ride.
"Thanks for picking us up so last minute, you think you can drop us off later too?" Kaia asked.
"You're asking for a lot," he warned her.
"Thanks big brother," she teased.
"Hey, Luca! You coming to the dance tonight?" Tara asked.
"Nah," he said.
"Why not?" asked Ahni.
"I was only gonna go if the theme was Paris," he teased, looking at me through the rearview mirror.
"Ha ha, so funny," I said sarcastically.
"But no seriously, why not? We spent a lot of time working on it!" Kaia sighed.
"I didn't buy a ticket," he said.
The four of us gasped, scaring Luca and causing him to slam on his breaks. "What the hell?!" he exclaimed.
"We forgot to buy tickets!" Ahni whined.
"We were so busy planning!" Tara complained
"And arguing," Luca added.
