You're More Than I deserve

Chapter 3

(Ty Lee's POV)

Zuko hadn't been seen since yesterday, in the invasion. No one was talking about it, but it was clear he wasn't going to come back. Mai was also crankier than usual.

-   "Azula, do you think we should talk to her?"

-   "To who?"

-   "To Mai"

-   "Why?"

-   "She seems downer than usual"

Azula looked up from her book to see our friend frowning in the corner of the room. Then she said:

-   "If you want to talk to her, go ahead. I'm off to training"

With that she stood up and left. I walked over to Mai, who looked angrily at the wall

-   "Hey"

She looked at me for a moment, then brought her gaze back to the wall

-   "Hey."

-   "Are you ok?"

She sighed

-   "No"

-   "Wanna talk about it?"

She sighed again. Then she handed me a letter, which I realised she's been holding the whole time

-   "It's better if I just show you"

I took it

-   "What's this?"

-   "He left me a letter. After everything. That's all I got."

I carefully unwrapped the paper

"Dear Mai,

I'm sorry you have to find out this way, but I'm leaving. It's time for me to go, this was never my home.

They need me. This banished prince is finding his way. After all that time, the Avatar did carry my fate, just in a way I didn't know

Goodbye. I hope that after the war is won we can meet again.

-   "Wow... Um... No wonder you're upset"

-   "No kidding. He traded us for the Avatar"

-   "That sucks"

-   "It does."

Suddenly, a thought came to mind

-   "How do you think Azula is feeling?"

Mai furrowed her brows

-   "Azula?"

-   "Yeah. I mean, her brother did just become a full blown traitor"

-   "I honestly don't think she cares that much"

-   "Weren't you the one saying she is a human being with human feelings a few days ago?"

-   "Maybe, but I've never really seen her caring about Zuko. And now she has no competition for the succession of the throne"

-   "Well, she doesn't show she cares. Remember her mission was to bring Zuko as a prisoner? Instead she brought him as a war hero. She didn't have to do that"

-   "I guess... I still don't think she cares, though."

-   "Maybe I'll talk to her later"
