Danielle Davis

"He couldn't have meant it that way." Natalie says, following me as I packed my bags.

"You didn't see his face Nat." I stop briefly to glance at her. Then I go back to stuffing things into my bag. "He definitely meant what he said."

I had just finished telling her about Matisse and I. It's safe to say she was shocked the way things suddenly ended.

"I don't believe it for a second." She folds her arms as she sits on the edge of my bed.

I chuckle. "Then you have a lot of hope."

I force my weight onto the suitcase before zipping it up.

I was able to switch my flight to tonight. The audition was still a month away, but I figure I could get a jump on things. Get a feel of the Big Apple ahead of time.

"Just because things didn't work out, doesn't mean you have to leave." Natalie says.

"That's exactly why I have to leave Nat." I grunt as I pull the suitcase off the bed. "There's no point in staying around."

"But-"

"Natalie." I warn. "It's over."

She growls but I shrug her off. I couldn't be here looking for love. I have a chance to follow my dream and I'm going to take it.

"What if he does text you?" She says.

"I won't answer." I shrug.

"Bullshit." She said.

I shrug again, starting to pack my duffel bag with toiletries.

"I went a week without hearing from him, I think I'll be pretty good." I say.

She groans. "Dani, just give it a chance."

"What is meant for me will come to me." I turn to look at her. "Until then, I'm catching dreams, not feelings."

She sighs, giving up. She knew how much dancing meant to me, and I wasn't about to lose sight of that. I couldn't.

My phone dings and I pick it up. I read the message from the unknown number.

+1 (480) 923-5106

can we talk?

I lock my phone and toss it back onto the bed.

"Who is that?" Natalie asked.

"Who do you think?" I go back to packing my duffel.

"Matisse?" She perks up.

I don't answer and she assumes that's who it is. So she grabs my phone and attempts to unlock it.

After three failed attempts, she glares at me.

"You changed your passcode?" Her left eye twitches.

I nod.

"Why?" Her nose flares.

"Because I knew you would do this." I snatch my phone from her, tossing it into my pillows. "I'm not talking to him."

"Dani, whyyy?" She whined.

"I made the same mistake twice. I can't allow myself to do that again." I walk into my bathroom.

"At least listen to what he has to say." She pleaded.

"He told me everything I needed to know." I take some things out of the cabinet. "I accepted it for what it was, and now I'm moving on."

"But it has to mean something if he wants to talk." She pokes her head into the bathroom.
