"I took you in to be my apprentice, and you can't even use magic?" Merlin scolded, shaking his head with his arms crossed. You scowled at him, frustration starting to fray the edges of your nerves.
"It's not like I've ever tried to use magic before- I'm still not entirely convinced I can!" You protested frustratedly. Hisirdoux was sweeping in the corner, grumbling under his breath about having to clean while you 'practiced'. He hadn't looked you in the eyes since you started training with Merlin. You weren't entirely sure why; you weren't exactly trying to be intimidating, and you were perfectly friendly towards him. You even thought he was kinda funny.
"No, they wouldn't have sent you if you couldn't. Clearly no one's been competent enough, including you, to help you unlock your powers properly," Merlin continued, sighing. You stuck your tongue out at him, tucking a stray strand of hair behind your ear as you sighed frustratedly.
You whirled around as a loud crash sounded, Merlin following in suit, both of you finding Hisirdoux sprawled on the floor, books surrounding him. It seemed he'd accidentally bumped into the bookcase, knocking several books off the shelves, and had attempted to catch the books, only to fall to the ground himself. You hid a snicker and immediately went to his side, picking up the books and putting them back into place.
"Thank you, kind (y/n)," Hisirdoux said, scrambling to his feet to help you with slightly widened eyes.
"You're welcome," you reply, too focused on the task at hand to notice the grateful and shocked expression on his face.
"(Y/n), if you are quite done with that, I'd like to get back to your training," Merlin said, watching you and Hisirdoux with a curious frown. You groaned, putting the last book back into place before facing Merlin.
"Can't we just go and study the medical sciences in the library already?" you whined, crossing your arms.
"Unlike you, I actually care more about the good of the many than the good of the few. It is better that you focus on your magic then healing," Merlin countered calmly.
"And unlike you, I actually have a heart, and a mother I'd like to get back to," you muttered to yourself angrily. Both Hisirdoux and Merlin heard you. Hisirdoux seemed to be impressed by your dedication to helping your family, while Merlin's impatience only grew.
"You really think you can help your mother in the state you're in? You can't even cast the simplest of spells; you are not capable of doing what is necessary to save your mother." Your eyes widened, your hands gripping your opposite arms tightly from your anger.
"I don't care if you don't think I can do it, I will find a way, whether you like it or not," you snapped, glaring at him. Merlin was quiet for a moment, studying you with a blank expression, before picking up a nearby book and throwing it at Hisirdoux.
"Woah!" Hisirdoux yelped.
On instinct, your hand reached out to grab the book to keep it from hitting Hisirdoux, despite it being out of your reach. To both you and Hisirdoux's surprise, the book was suddenly suspended in mid-air, right in front of his nose, surrounded by a (f/c) glow. The glow quickly faded and the book fell harmlessly to the floor in front of Hisirdoux's feet. Merlin stared at you expectantly.
"I- what- was that me?!" you squeaked, staring at the book in the floor with wide eyes. Merlin rolled his eyes while Hisirdoux reached down and picked up the book, an odd expression on his face.
"Yes, it was you. I can't say I'm surprised it took putting someone else in danger for you to unlock your powers, considering how you listen to your emotions more then your logic." You bit back a snide comment.
