≿━━━━༺ 500 YEARS AGO, KHAENRI'AH ༻━━━━≾

"Leave the kingdom and be free."

(Y/n) stood before Dainsleif, puzzled by his words. They were both standing outside of the palace that was the symbol of the proud Eclipse Dynasty; it used to be a place thriving with life, but it's now a desolate ruin shrouded in gloom. The young king who once sat on the throne was no longer there, having reunited with the earth after laying his life down to protect his subordinates. However, most of the royal guards and knights fell to the monsters created by Gold's experiments shortly after, leaving merely a handful behind. The survivors eventually abandoned the palace and roamed Khaenri'ah to engage in a never-ending battle with the shadowy monsters.

Only (y/n) remained in the ruins of the palace with Dainsleif.

She never expected that this day would come however.

"Why?" she asked. She didn't understand why he wanted her to leave Khaenri'ah.

"You saw what Gold created, didn't you? The gods ruling in the aboveground world will soon destroy our home," he answered grimly.

(Y/n) placed a hand on her chest. "Then I'll fight those gods. Isn't that the reason I was created in the first place - to destroy Celestia and break the cycle Teyvat is trapped in?"

"No," Dainsleif said as he grasped her shoulders, "You were created to protect the future of mankind. Don't think of yourself as a weapon to destroy, but to protect."

"But... I don't want to leave your side," she whispered, gaze downcast, "Please let me fight with you."

Please don't push me away.

He shook his head, his arms going slack as they returned to his sides. "You cannot fall with Khaenri'ah. You must survive to carry on this knowledge, because only you and I can remember history as it is. There's no doubt that once Khaenri'ah is destroyed, the gods will twist the tales and fabricate the truth."

"That still doesn't explain why you want me to leave!" she exclaimed, taking a step towards him; she was frustrated that he wasn't answering her question directly.

The blond stared at her for a moment, like he was trying to ingrain the image of her face in his mind. As they grew closer to each other since the day he saved her from the research facility that was run by Gold's family, he developed feelings beyond friendship for her. He didn't know what he wanted for her in the beginning, but now he realised that he wanted her to be free of the shackles binding her to her eternal duty.

"I just want you to live on as a human," he uttered, resting his hand on top of her head. (Y/n) went silent at those words, and he gingerly stroked her hair.

So you need to leave my side.

Dainsleif wished for her to live normally. She won't be able to understand what being human means now that he's immortal as a result of him failing to prevent the fall of Khaenri'ah's final dynasty; the noble meaning of human life was not something he can show her anymore.

He gritted his teeth.

It's all Gold's fault.

Gold's bottomless greed to create powerful creatures drove the kingdom into a corner, and now the people are forced to reap what they had sown.

Khaenri'ah will surely be punished for their transgression.

Dainsleif decided that (y/n) must be kept hidden from the eyes of Celestia. She needed to leave Khaenri'ah so she wouldn't be destroyed along with it, but seeing as she was stubborn about staying behind to protect the desolate kingdom, he thought that perhaps he should leave first to make her follow.
