"You coming?", he asks. I turn to him again and we leave the room we woke up in behind us. Now we're heading down a black corridor. The panic from the dark room before is still stuck in my bones and it seems like I'm quite obvious about it because Newt randomly grabs my hand.

It's comforting.

The corridor finally comes to an end in another room. Newt soon finds the light switch and the lights go on.

The first thing that pops into my sight is a rather big sign on the opposite wall. I slowly approach the sign and read it: "institute for brain research with virtual reality".

"Virtual reality?", Newt asks quietly. The two of us stare silently at the sign. Unwilling to even move an inch, even less to accept what we just found. At least until I eventually break the silence. "So all of this wasn't real?"

Newt doesn't say anything. He just keeps standing there and staring at this freaking sign.

"All of the klunk we went through, all the death and loss we witnessed wasn't real?", I get louder and now Newt finally moves.

"Shhhht Tommy. Calm down.", he tries to reassure, but I back away.

"No, I definitely won't calm down. I want those shits to know how much I love the fact that they played with us. Again!", I scream.

"Tommy. Calm down. We need to get out of here!", Newt tries again, but a very concerning thing pops into my head.

"What if this isn't real either?", I whisper. He freezes in his movement. His mouth opens a tiny bit. He thinks about what I've just said. "What if all of this is just another attempt of playing with us again? It always seemed like everything we see is controlled by WCKD. And apparently that wasn't even true. So why should anything be real at this point? All of the things that were ever around us were just plastic. For all I know, I could be a bunch of plastic!" I screamed as the realisation hit me right in the face. "What if even you are fake?", I ask myself breathless.

"Tommy...", he says hurt and takes a step closer but I back away once again. "Stop", I tell him. To see the tears in his eyes hurts me but I'm too confused at the moment. I would love to have him close to me. To smell his very specific scent, to have his arms wrapped around me or to feel the warmth of his body. On the other side I'm scared that he's just something created by machines in order to play with my feelings. The question is, would that even make a difference to the virtual reality before?

"I don't know if I'm real.", he says with a tear slowly running down his cheek but steady voice. "I don't know if any of this is real, if you are real. But what can we do about it? Nothing. Not really, I guess. So if I have to choose between worrying about every single thing that happens or taking life as it comes with the hope that it's as it is supposed to be, my choice is obvious. And that is, why I'm willing to put the tiny bit of trust I have left inside me, into you, Thomas."

He slowly takes a step closer, but I'm not backing away this time which gives him a slight smile. He takes step after step until he's right in front of me. He embraces me in a hug. I'm overwhelmed yet again but soon hug him back and bury my face into his shoulder.

"I lay my trust in you as well, Newt.", I murmur and secretly take in his scent. A smile spreads on my face and I somehow feel save.

Unfortunately, the hug eventually finds an end and we continue with our expedition. All in all, we don't find too much. There are a few knifes which get their place in our pockets, a decent sized bag who now also stores a few knifes and as well a fridge where we find two water bottles which we put in the bag as well.

That's all we find. We look around for a second time although we know we searched through everything when I see a glow coming from an edge of the room. We carefully step closer but the moment we see where the light comes from, we stop.

"Is this some sort of joke?", Newt asks.

"Whoever did it isn't funny at all tho.", I note while we look at the exit-sign.

"Nevermind.", Newt shrugs and makes himself ready to go outside the trapdoor. "You help me if there's a griever army ouside?"

"Sure", I smirk and grab a knife. Newt sends a smile back until his gaze wanders back to the trapdoor. "Ready?"

"Ready when you are.", I answer and he opens the trapdoor.

I'm mentally prepared for the worst but against my assumption there are no wild beasts outside. There's only a forest.

"Bloody hell?"

"We literally are a joke to them.", I groan. "Where the shuck are we?"

No grievers, no cranks, no head-eating bowling balls, nothing. Only forest and no living thing. Well except us. Obviously.

"Might as well get going.", says Newt and we head towards one direction.

The forest is actually pretty beautiful. The green leaves are swinging in the wind which is blowing into our faces and makes our hair move. Birds are happily chirping and the sunlight sometimes shines brightly on a certain spot.

We struggle a bit due to thick bushes on the ground and sticks in our faces, but we're used to worse. Also the temperature is nice. The wind cools us down a bit and it's not too hot in general. That's for sure the best journey I remember.

We're going rather fast. Maybe the machines trained our bodies while we ran around in the virtual world? I don't know. It benefits us, that's all I need to know.

Travelling as a Duo is more enjoyable than travelling as a group. You don't have to wait all the time because the people go so slowly. I admit that I have to wait for Newt a few times but that's only because...

I stop immediately.

New chapter. It came pretty fast. Sorry for the bad cut tho...(not really but I'm trying to be polite xD) I'm gonna try to update real soon. The next chapter is already more than half finished, so it should be possible. Thanks for reading again!

What did Thomas notice?
