CW: slight violence
Kaito woke up in a cold sweat many times last night. He couldn't get the memory of what he saw out of his mind. Shuichi's closest ally hung there, still and cold. He can't begin to imagine what Shuichi is feeling right now, with sleepless nights and trauma nightmares that could stick with him for years. Kaede was talking to him about being more confident before Kokichi interrupted. 'Now it's my turn.' he thought.
At last the Monokuma announcement went off to start the day. The first thing Kaito does is walk over to Shuichi's door, and knocking rather loudly. No response. He knocks again. "Coming!" says a faint voice. Shuichi opens the door and yawns. His eyebags were more prominent than before, and his hair clearly not brushed. "Hey there, let's go get breakfast." "What about my- nevermind. Let's go."
As soon as they walked in, all eyes landed on Shuichi. "You finally got rid of that emo hat! Is this because Kaede died or whatever?" exclaimed Kokichi. "Don't be so insensitive.." said Kirumi. "Yeah Kokichi! It's not funny!" Kaito chimed in. "We don't need a greek chorus, Kaito."
"Oh whatever, and yeah Shuichi, you look good!" "Thanks.."At some point, Monokuma appeared in thin air. "Puhuhu! What do we have here? Oh whatever! Let's get to the point. Here's some items. They'll unlock stuff in the school go have fun. Oh, and I almost forgot! Here's what you call a flashback light!" He pulled out what looked like an ordinary flashlight. "These restore lost memories!" "Huh? How the hell does that make any sense?" Miu chimed in. "It doesn't! But you're just gonna have to trust me puhuhu."
"Welp it's a worth trying at least," Miu said. "On three!" She didn't count down and instead just turned it on. It was a vivid vision of each and every one of them escaping the grasps of the so-called 'Ultimate Hunt' by erasing their unique talents to blend in with the crowd.
"Didn't Rantaro mention that?" Tenko asked. "I mean the ultimate hunt."
"Oh he did! I remember!" Kokichi exclaimed. "I wasn't asking you degenerate male!"
"It is truly a shame. There are many things I still inquire about that man," Korekiyo said."So um.. who should get the pieces Monokuma gave us?"
"Of course you, Shuichi!" Kaito replied. "You're the ultimate detective after all!"
"Oh um ok."Since Kaito had given the responsibilities to Shuichi to unlock the things in the school, he had time to roam around. He explored many areas and most were either research labs or empty classrooms. The own sound of his footsteps echoing through the halls gave an eerie vibe. He stopped by Maki's lab to check it out. "Do you wanna die?" She threatened. "Aha, no." Kaito then just walked away.
Head empty, he slouched up against the wall of a hallway's end. Eyes getting heavier, he let his knees collapse and sit on the floor. Soon enough he fell asleep.

Kokichi also had free time. Ever since the trial, something has been bugging him. He thought over the entire thing, with the image of Rantaro's dead body flashing through his mind. He thought about the look in Shuichi's eyes when he accused Kaede. The look in Shuichi's eyes when Kaito slapped him. Why did he do that anyways? Shuichi literally saved everyone's butts! There's no reason for Kaito to be angry.
After all, didn't Kaito like Shuichi? Oh, maybe he's just a tsundere! But to be honest Kokichi felt like those feelings were superficial and likely dead anyway.
Kokichi loitered around the cafeteria for a bit, rubbing away his mild headache. The buzzing of the ceiling lights and distant chatter felt so loud he wanted to explode. After about 10 minutes he retreated to his room. In his room was a board full of pictures of his fellow classmates, sorted into categories of trustworthiness. With barely anything to go by, it wasn't exactly useful yet. He looked up at it and stared at Kaede and Rantaro's faces. They were both on the '?' side. His heart sank as he removed those photos off the board.
'Why am I even sad? I barely know them!' He thought. He sprawled on his bed, photos in hand. He closed his eyes, attempting to control his breathing. After a few moments his mouth involuntarily curled into an ugly grimace, fighting back tears. 'I should blow off some steam.' At that Kokichi hopped out of bed and grabbed something from the kitchen.

Kaito was having a very strange dream. He was walking around one of those indoor playgrounds, with him being the only one there. Bits of his vision were being scraped away as everything mixed into a blurb. Once his vision had gone completely, he heard slow and careful footsteps, and unsteady breathing. His eyes drifted open and focused on the source of the sound. "Kokichi..?"
There standing was the boy he hated most, a silver and pointy tool clenched in his fist. They both gazed into each other's eyes from a distance, time almost stopping for a second. Kaito stood up, slightly dizzy from his iron deficiency. The other one bounded towards him, raising the knife with a smirk on his face.
Kaito threw his hands up in protection and accidentally slammed his side on the corner of the wall. He retracted in pain as Kokichi cornered him and swung his arm at him. Kaito being stronger than him grabbed his thin wrist and grappled the weapon out of his hand.
"Hey! Give it!" he said, jumping to try and get the knife back. Kaito tossed it aside, grabbed his shoulders and turned him around and pinned him against the wall. Both their hearts beating rapidly from the adrenaline. "It doesn't matter.." Kaito whispered with a resentful tone. Kokichi looked away from him shoulders tensed. His knees could buckle at any moment, only being held up by Kaito's firm grip.
"Let go of me.." Kokichi muttered. Kaito looked hesitant. "I bet you you're just gonna get the knife and kill me! No way!" "Aha! So true! Yet that was all just a lie! Oh my god hahaahaaa! You thought I was gonna kill you!" Kaito pushed him away. "Well no shit sherlock! You literally attacked me! How is this funny to you?"
Since Kaito let go, Kokichi fell to the ground. "Nehehe, Come sit!" he smiled as he pat the space next to him. Kaito groaned but complied anyway. 'Nothing else to do.' he thought. Kaito sat a considerable distance away from him, and rightfully so, but that didn't stop Kokichi from scooting closer with that big goofy smile on his face. "You were scared, huh?" "Well duh!" "Oh, I see." Kokichi said with a low voice. "...What's your problem?" "I've been asking myself the same question everyday and still can't seem to find an answer." The boys sat there in a peaceful silence for a few minutes.
"Hey, um. Can you not pretend to kill me? Thanks."
"Haha, you say that so matter of fact-ly!"
"You didn't answer the question."
"Oh sure! Totally."
"..."Minute after minute passed by without a word until...
Kaito was kind of startled at the feeling of Kokichi head begin to rest on his shoulders, sound asleep. 'Of course this happened' he thought. He looked around awkwardly, even though nobody was watching.
"Cute."
Is what you would want him to say.
In all actuality Kaito couldn't really see his face so he just kinda sat there.
But lucky you, he was thinking of a similar fanfiction trope where the awake person says something along the lines of "cute" and the 'asleep' person is actually awake and heard it all. He just wanted to reenact it for the laughs, but didn't know his horrible mistake."Cute."
Kokichi lifted his head and faced Kaito with a smirk, "Aww you really mean that?"
Kaito could die right then and there. He felt himself blush at the fact that Kokichi now has the wrong Idea of him."N-no! I-I-I-I-I-I"
ok I'll stop"Wha- no! Of course not!"
"Then what did you mean by cute?"
"It's this fanfiction trope! I don't like you!"
Kokichi beamed. "Ohhh you write fanfiction? Makes a lot more sense. But either way I'm not buying it Kaito. We're probably being controlled by a 12 year old right now, so whatever thing you have going on for me is probably an elaborate sham. Nehehe! I'm gonna go, get better bestie!"
Kokichi picked up the knife and skipped away.
"H-hey, wait!" Kaito called. But he ignored him and was gone.Kaito closed his eyes a let out a groan. Now he had more things to deal with. What if Kokichi went and told everyone? Now that would be bad. But does romance really matter in a killing game?
