𝐁𝐔𝐈𝐋𝐃 𝐈𝐓 𝐁𝐄𝐓𝐓𝐄𝐑 [𝗕𝗨𝗖𝗞𝗬 𝗕𝗔𝗥𝗡𝗘𝗦]

(001.) FINAL GOODBYE

[ 1986 ]

SEATED NEXT TO her father at one of the meetings about planning their next move, Madeline only had one thing on her mind. She had been wondering what time James would return from his latest mission, wanted to make sure he was okay before his memory was wiped again.

Not listening to a thing that was going on around her, She was quickly brought out of her thoughts by her father calling her name asking her to go make sure that James was taken to the chamber. Jumping up at the idea of she seeing him, she agreed and headed to meet him.

The corridors to get to the chamber room were dark and quiet, the only sound to fill the room were the sound of footsteps from the soldiers that followed her fathers orders. It gave Madeline chills when she walk down to the room, she didn't like it at all, she found it to give her nightmares sometimes, knowing what went on in the room.

As she entered she saw James sitting in the chair with doctors crowded around him, she gave him a small smile before asking the doctors to give them a moment alone before the did their work.

She stood next to him, resting her hand on his as he looked at her with sorrow in his eyes. "hey, how did it go?" she asked, trying to get him to tell her that he was okay.

"The mission went well, the targets were taken out." he said sternly.

"I know that James, i meant are you okay?"

"I'll be fine Maddy, i'll forget all about it in a few minutes anyway so stop worrying yourself." he said, intertwining his hands with hers.

"You shouldn't have to forget like this James, i hate what my father does to you! I wish we could just run from this, from them." she sighed, breaking the eye contact with him and looking down at their hands.

James lightly chuckled at her and places his free hand on her cheek, cupping her face and bring her to look at him. "You know even if we did run from this Maddy we would never be safe, we wouldn't have a life at all. As much as i hate this, i'm okay with it because i know that you're safe."

Before Madeline could respond to what James had said her father had walked into room and the only thing he could see what his daughter in the arms of his project, and he hated that.
He grabbed her with a strong grip on the arm and pulled her away from James, shouting from the top of his lungs at how furious he was.

Madeline knew that this was the end of everything she had with James, she knew that her father would either kill her or James and in that moment she wished it would be her.

She had been dragged into her fathers office and told to sit down opposite him. He looked at her with so much rage on his face that she thought he would explode. "Do you have any idea how much trouble you have caused doing this Madeline!" Her father yelled, slamming his hands on the desk in front of him.

"Father i'm sorry, please just don't kill him!" she pleaded, trying to make her father show a small bit of mercy for his daughter but deep down she knew that he wasn't capable of such things.

"Kill him? Madeline are you being serious right now? The winter soldier is the most amazing thing i have created and killing him would be a mistake. I'm not going to kill him, he's going to stay here with his memory being erased but you on the other hand will be going in the cryostasis chamber so that i can keep you young and away from him."

Madeline didn't say anything, she just looked at her father as a tear dropped down her face. She couldn't believe that her father would ever do that to her, she thought that she meant something to him but she was wrong. Her father walked over to her and placed his hand on her shoulder before Madeline spoke up. "can i at least say goodbye to him, please?" she whispered, saying it loud enough for her father to hear her.

"Fine Madeline but make it quick." he said, getting up and walking with her to see James.

When she returned to the room that James was in, she could see him in the same place with a face with no expression until he saw her face. She had tears running down her face as she walked towards him reaching her hand out for him to take.

"Hey." she sniffled as he cupped her face with his hands, staring into each other's eyes.

"What's happening Maddy, What's he doing to you?" James said trying to get answers but Madeline just shook her head.

"Listen to me James, i'm going away for a while which means you will probably forget all about me but i want you to know that when i come back i'll make sure we can be together." she said, trying to hold back the tears in her eyes.

James didn't say anything, he knew what she meant and he hated it. He stroked her cheek with his thumb and for one last time he counted the freckles on her face one by one, and for the first time she wished that there were more of them.

"I found you once Maddy, i promise you that i will find you again." he whispered softly before pressing his forehead together with hers.

And with that her father told her it was time, it was time that she remained frozen for years and time for James to forget about her. She was taken to the chamber but before she would say goodbye to the world her father did something unexpected. He hugged her. He hugged his daughter for the first time in 19 years and told her that he was sorry. Then she was gone, her body frozen and her father stood there alone.
