[On the surface]
"Watch out!"
Scorpion's voice bellowed out at Essence narrowly dodged a blow from a Seawing. She countered with a swift kick to his ribs and dodged another blow from his tail without so much as a glance. In a flash, Scorpion was by her side. He quickly knocked the soldier down with a huge slap to the side of his face. Essence gave her partner a quick appreciative glance before they were overtaken by an Icewing and another Seawing who rose from the ocean.
Quicksand fought near Tundra, farther along the coast. Letting a Seawing's claws slice the air right above her head, she rushed forward below his arm and threw two handfuls of sand in his face, temporarily blinding him. She sank her claws into his hind talon as he staggered back, severing a tendon with her teeth while stabbing his abdomen with a quick jab of her tail. Her attacker yelped and staggered into the ocean.
Sensing a presence behind her, the hybrid whipped around to see a glittering Icewing lunge at her, claws outstretched. But before she could move Tundra had her in a headlock, both bodies falling heavily to the ground. He quickly adjusted into a choke hold, making the Order Icewing gasp for breath.
"Now, we're even," Tundra grimaced, tightening his grip. Quicksand moved in to inflict some injury when the Icewing sputtered something quietly so that only the three of them could hear.
"Tundra..."
The scarved Icewing snapped her neck.
"TUNDRA!" A golden dragon exploded, not so quietly. He ran over, seemingly having defeated his enemies. "What the hell is wrong with you? We could've questioned them!"
Tundra sighed, dropping the soldier's body and brushing off his scarf. "Think, big guy. If we'd kept her around Eve may have been able to find us. For all we know, she could have some sort of animus tracking enchantment."
"You have a point," said Essence, appearing behind him. "But you didn't have to kill her... we should at least make a grave."
It was silent as they dug a hole halfway between the ocean and the well. Scorpion lowered her body in, and soon all that was left of the soldier was a small mound of sand. As Scorpion and Essence looked over each other's injuries, Quicksand walked over to Tundra and stood beside him, looking in the opposite direction toward the ocean.
"How did she know your name?"
"Huh?"
"How did she know your name?" the hybrid asked again. "The soldier."
There was a pause. "My family is well known in the Ice Kingdom," Tundra stated. "She was probably surprised to see me working with a Nightwing hybrid."
"I-"
There was a commotion behind them.
"NO!"
A blue blur literally burst out of the pool, landing a few feet away from the opening. Kraken whipped her head around. "WHERE IS SHE?"
Essence was at her side in no time. "Eve got away? Do you have the key?" Scorpion and Tundra rushed to her next, Quicksand following after a slight pause.
"No, I- I failed... I-"
Nobody had seen Kraken look so vulnerable before, save for Essence. The strong, fearless Seawing was now covered in wounds, shaking and on the verge of tears. Essence urged her on soothingly.
"I had a ch-choice... save the key or the lantern... I'm s-sorry, I had to save S-Swellow. Even if it... meant giving up the..."
She held up the Relic. Essence enveloped her in a warm hug, making her drop it. "It's okay, Kraken. I don't blame you."
