“Good Morning River. How are we today?” The nurse gracefully walks into my room, carting a medicine trolley behind her. I wonder when they will discover the collection of pills under my bed. The voices have begun to vocalise their thoughts, though there is nothing I can do about it. I must stay calm. They get stronger every day as I become weaker and weaker; I can’t do this alone any longer.

“Here you are, River.” The pure trainee nurse speaks as she hands me the little white pills. I sit here, blankly staring at them. They will silence the voices, I am constantly told. The fire will burn no more. I will not hurt my family again. I slowly move the tiny pill to my mouth. Am I in control now?
