Angst/Fluff
AU: In this AU, Nagato isn't crippled, but his body is weaker than when he was younger. In this AU, Konan was abused as a kid.
Konan paced the room, her worries getting the best of her. Some days she just wanted to scream at him. He went around pushing himself to the limit to uphold his image of a leader. As she paced, her feet shuffling across the rug, she wondered if she should visit him, or just send him a letter. It was stressful, caring for him. He had his mind set on bringing peace to his village, through hard work and responsible leading. She knew this was what he had wanted, but it wasn't his plan. It hurt her, and worried her, to see how he pushed himself to lead the Akatsuki and the village. She was so deep in thought, she didn't hear her door creak open. "Konan?" she turned to see Deidara, a puzzled expression plastered on his face. "Boss called, we have a meeting." the blonde stated blatantly. He walked off, leaving her, although she soon came running after.
Konan entered the room, the atmosphere heavy with tension. Seeing Hidan, Deidara and Pain in a staring match, she raised an eyebrow in Itachi's direction. He shrugged, oblivious to the cause of the aggression shown between the three. She cleared her throat, snapping the boy's back into reality. "I came here for a meeting, not to see you lot bickering over Lord knows what." she remarked, and with that, lowered into her seat, on the left of Pain. The seating was simple. Pain sat at the head of the table, with Konan on his left and Tobi on his right, next to Tobi was Deidara, with Sasori, Zetsu, and Orochimaru on his right. Meanwhile, Kakuzu, Hidan, Itachi and Kisame were by Konan's side. At the unoccupied end of the table stood Sasuke, Karin and Suigetsu.
The meeting was similar to the past few, exchanging information and planning out missions. It was simple, but what kept the group working effectively. After everyone was dismissed, Konan went to her bedroom and sat at her desk. She pulled out a bottle of dark blue ink and a quill, along with a piece of paper. She felt confused, wanting to visit Nagato, but she was also scared to see his current state. So she began to write pouring her worries into her message, hiding the occasional remark of affection in the concerned letter. However Konan realized that it was best to talk to him face on, so he could see that he was causing more harm than good by spreading himself thin, taking care of all the paper-work for the Akatsuki while leading the Rain. So she opened a window and flew off, ready to go see Nagato.
She landed on the balcony of a tall, cold tower. She walked into a dark office and turned to a large oak desk, piled with paperwork. He clearly hadn't sensed her, so she walked up quietly and laid her hand on the desk. He lifted his head , away from the paperwork strewn across the table. "Nagato." she softly whispered. He looked at her, and she could see dark bags under his eyes from how tired he was. She grabbed his chin " Stop working right now." she said, a tone of ferocity barely making its way into her voice. He raised an eyebrow " Eh, how come, I have so much to do!" His inquiry frustrated her. " You know DAMN well why. You need sleep!" Before he could protest she continued " You are going to rest while I finish this!" he grumbled and walked over to a couch at the other end of the room and laid down. Konan looked down and frowned. This work all seemed so easy, why was he struggling so much. Nonetheless, she continued, her hair covering her face as she lent over the randomly arrayed forms.
Time ticked by, her only reminder being the sun in the sky behind her, and the soft click of a clock on the wall. A warm breeze blew through the office as it slowly got darker. After a while it got too dark and Konan lit a candle to illuminate her work, leaving the rest of the room in shadows so Nagato could rest. Nagato awoke soon after, feeling somewhat replenished, he took the darkness as an opportunity and snuck off to one of Konan's favorite food places in the village, a simple restaurant that sold tea and roast meals. He got her favorite tea, a berry, passion-fruit and peach blend, and a roast chicken and mash meal, containing chicken, mashed potato, carrots, peas and gravy, while he got a green tea and a barbecue box.
He came back to the tower to find her still working away tirelessly, the room silent except for the splash of rain on the window and the tick of his clock. Konan's head slowly rose up at the smell of her favorite meal. The lights clicked on, revealing that Nagato was gone, yet she did not panic. " I know you're hiding, I'm a sensory ninja, remember?" He sighed and jumped down from the roof behind her. " I was going to sneak up on you." he smiled sheepishly and looked to the ground, while thrusting a box of food and a hot cup of tea into Konan's hands. "Ehe, I got us food!" he said, trying to change the subject. She opened the box and looked at him seriously. "You forgot to ask for cutlery." He face palmed and slid onto the couch in defeat. She tossed something at him, which he caught. He looked at it and saw that it was a simple paper fork, hardened by chakra. He bent to look at it and felt something whiz past his head. "I'm not sure how to form a knife, would a kunai do?" she smiled. He gave a chuckle and pulled said kunai from the wall behind him. She moved from the desk and came to sit on the couch next to him. She opened her meal and began to eat carefully, cutting everything into bite-sized chunks. Nagato eyed up Konan's chicken, to which she replied by stabbing a chunk of it, and putting it up to his mouth.
Soon they had finished eating, the steamy takeout boxes sat on the small coffee table in front of them. Konan sipped her tea and rested her head on Nagato's shoulder. He gave a close-eyed smile at the soft display of affection and held her unoccupied hand, intertwining their fingers. She smiled and put down her empty mug, while he did the same. She yawned and remarked " I'm exhausted." He took the opportunity and said " So now you see how difficult my job is!" She smirked and replied cheekily " No, its just that, you had so much to do, the work itself was easy, believe me!" He frowned and grumbled " Are you implying that I'm stupid.?" She laughed and gripped his hand. " Maybe I am"Oh Mighty One". Maybe I am." He turned his head away and sulked. "Meanie." She gave him a peck on the cheek and turned back around. She yawned and said " I should probably head back to base to keep things in check." But before she could get up, he wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her down, her head on his chest.
He stroked her hair as she softly sung, her voice living up to her nickname, as it was that of an angel. Nagato melted and began to relax, unwinding from all his stress.
I used to shut my door, while my mother screamed in the kitchen.
I'd turn the music up, get high and try not to listen to every little fight.
Cause neither one was right.
I swore I'd never be like them, but I was just a kid back then.
The older I get, the more that I see.
My parents aren't hero's, they're just like me.
And loving is hard, it don't always work.
You just try your best not to get hurt.
I used to be mad, but now I know, sometimes its better to let someone go.
It just hadn't hit me yet, the older I get.
Konan turned to Nagato and gave a soft smile when she saw he was asleep. She sent out her paper to lock the doors and close the blinds, and once she was sure they were safe, she got her paper to bring a single blanket and heaved it over the two of them. She felt warm and safe. She just relaxed, melting into sleep, Nagato's arms wrapped around her lovingly. She was happy, because she loved him.
