Cursed brooms

After dinner, the twins had to go to detention in the dungeons. They had been dreading it all day. Why? When you are afraid of a floating hooded figure trying to slice you in half with a scythe, where do you not want to go?

Into the dark, cold dungeons with shadows lurking at every corner.

Ron accompanied them, but it was obvious he would have rather not. He was terrified of Snape and as soon as the twins had entered his office, he would skedaddle right away.

Which he did.

Periwinkle swallowed when the heavy door fell shut behind them. Snape's office was even more creepy than she had imagined. There were jars filled with floating lizards and spiders on the shelves, and rows of black and red books that looked so old that a sneeze could probably blow them apart.

"Glad to see your Reaper let you come to your detention on time", said Snape with a sneer from behind his desk.

The twins remained silent, unsure what to do.

"Are you waiting for an invitation?", snarled Snape. His eyes narrowed.
"You will clean the cauldrons."
He motioned to a pile of filthy cauldrons in the corner, all covered with green slime.

Azalea gagged involuntarily.

"Without a wand", Snape added maliciously.

Kill me now, Azalea thought and glanced at Periwinkle. She knew her sister was thinking the same thing.

They hesitantly made their way over to the cauldrons and pulled up their sleeves before getting a bucket and a sponge.

We've cleaned hundreds of times at the Dursleys, thought Periwinkle, trying to make herself touch the slime. This is no different.

She wrinkled her nose disgustedly.

During their detention, the only sounds in the room were the scratching of Snape's quill and the scrubbing from their sponges. After they had finished, they were dismissed.

Once outside, the door slammed shut behind them.

Azalea and Periwinkle found themselves in the dark corridor and looked at each other uncertainly.

"What if the Reaper comes back?", whispered Azalea when the silence became to thick.

"I'll ice him and then we run", said Periwinkle, looking around nervously.
"Can you make a light? It's so dark here."

"We didn't learn those spells yet."

"I don't mean with your wand."

"Oh."
Azalea lifted her right hand and made a fist. When she opened it again, a golden flame appeared, casting a warm glow on their surroundings.

"Let's go", Periwinkle said determinedly. Having a light to shine her way seemed to make her braver.

The two started moving quickly down the corridor, staying close together.

"Why didn't it come yet?", Azalea mumbled after a few minutes and held up her hand to cast more light onto the ground.

"Maybe Snape scared it off in the library", said Periwinkle nervously. She fidgeted with her sleeves and kept turning around.
