Busy summer

Periwinkle and Azalea were busy over the holidays. Busy with research. Not with school stuff, Aunt Petunia had looked their books, wands and parchment away the second they entered the house.

No ... this research was more- extracurricular. Ever since Sir Nicholas had told them that their aura would attract other creatures, the twins wanted to know what they might have to face. They didn't expect to see anything odd in Little Whinging. That place was as ordinary as it could get.

From the money the twins got from helping Mrs. Figgs and Mr. Trinity weed their garden, the two bought books about supernatural beings. Obviously, the books in the muggle bookstore in their neighborhood were rubbish. The twins didn't need to be smart to know that nothing that was written about ghosts in those cheesy romance novels was true. They wouldn't find anything good in there.

So instead, Periwinkle put their money into an envelope, tied it to Atlas' leg and sent it to Ron with the request of buying a few books for them when he went to Diagon Alley. The muggle money could be changed to galleons and sickles there. From what Ron had told them, she knew he went quite frequently to visit some great-great-uncle, even though he couldn't buy much.

Ron was a little puzzled by that request, but a few days later Atlas and Seze carried together a large parcel containing six thick books. That showed Azalea and Periwinkle that Ron was truly a good friend. Luckily, they remembered to write him that Atlas and Seze should deliver the books to their room, even when they weren't there. Aunt Petunia would have a fit if the raven and the owl would land in the living room or worse- in her beloved vegetable patch.

Azalea also wrote Hermione and asked her if she knew good books on supernatural beings. Hermione, being the bookworm of the four, instantly wrote back that she did have one good book. She was kind enough to lent it to them over the holidays and it was carried by Seze through the window the next day.

When the two weren't busy weeding the flowerbed, going shopping, cleaning, tidying up, playing piano at Mr. Trinity's or secretly practicing their ice and fire magic in their room, they studied their books. Which they mostly did at night.

"Hey", whispered Azalea one night and looked up from 100 Most Known Magical Creatures. A luminiferous golden flame floated in the air above the twins' heads, illuminating the dark room so they could read.
"Listen to this: Okamis are beings that are stronger and faster than humans. They appear as humans with fangs and can heal extremely quickly. Their weakness: a bamboo dagger blessed by a priest."

Periwinkle shivered.
"That's creepy. They sound like vampires."

"They're not the same. Each Okami only hunts a certain type of humans, for example people of a certain age or gender."

They heard footsteps approaching. Azalea blew out the flame and the twins quickly slid under their covers. The footsteps stopped. Periwinkle and Azalea waited with baited breath. Then, the footsteps continued and faded away.

"Uncle Vernon", mumbled Azalea. "I thought he was asleep."

"Maybe your flame was too bright", Periwinkle whispered back. "I'm going to sleep now. I'm tired."

"Me too."

They silently hid their books under a loose floorboard and then got under their covers. Soon, they fell asleep and their minds dove into dreams about fanged humans and toothless zombies.

After only two weeks of summer holidays, something odd happened. Whenever Atlas and Seze got sent out with a letter to Ron or Hermione, they returned empty-taloned more and more frequently. The twins found this weird. Why would their friends not write back? Did someone intercept their birds and steal the letters?
