Chapter 7

It was 12:00 in the afternoon and Melanie and Caroline had spent the day together not talking about what happened when Melanie decided she should go. Caroline only objected a little before letting her go. Melanie took a shower at Caroline’s then got dressed into some ripped faded skinny jeans and a white t-shirt with a leather half-jacket. Caroline insisted on straightening her hair so Mel let her. It actually looked really cute.  Melanie left awhile after and went to her house after texting Bonnie seeing if she was home or not, which she wasn’t. It seemed as though she ended up staying home by herself most of the time anyways.

She pulled up and grabbed her stuff then walked in putting it away. She sighed leaning on the kitchen counter, thinking about everything. As much as she’s happy her friend was a witch she didn’t like the things she was finding out with it. Like Caroline’s mysteriously burning and supernatural healing fuck buddy and the strong weird feeling she gets around him or Stefan. She didn’t like the fact that she was still mad at Elena but wanted to call her right now and ask her what she thought about it. She sighed and figured she’d try to get some more answers about herself. She went back up to the attic and looked at the 3 big untouched boxes and started opening them. She cut opened the first and saw it was filled to the brim with books. Tons and tons of books. She sighed slumping. “This, is gonna take awhile…” She muttered to herself.

Melanie put on some music since she hated the silence and played some Paramore. She bobbed her head to ‘Misery Business’ singing along as she went through the first box. She skimmed through all of the books that were clearly from her mother’s study, and found only books on how the Yukara’s were ‘special’ and go way way back to the freakin’ 1400s and were a secretive type of weird ‘clan’ or ‘cult’ or something she couldn’t remember but it was always cryptic. Like it was a secret or like each book was hiding something. Like it told you who the Yukara’s were, but not really. Melanie was determined to find out though. She reached the bottom of the box when she found a really thick dusty leather book. She blew dust off the cover and saw the word ‘BEASTIARY’ written in a creepy font. “Beastiary? What the hell kind of name is that?” She said to herself opening it. She looked at the table of contents and saw all these names of mythical supernatural creatures but the whole book was in a different language. Japanese. Which she knew well and easily translated seeing as she was half Japanese half-Latino. She went down the list randomly naming all the creatures getting more and more interested, “Druids, Vampires, Werewolves, witches, Hybrids, Oni, Kanima, Shapshifters, Banshees, Reapers, Purgatory, Croats, Kitsune, Nogitsune, Hellhounds, Fairies- What in the world is this?!” Melanie yelled flipping through the book frantically finding highlights all over the pages and notes saying cryptic things like, ‘Dangerous’ ‘Don’t get too close’ ‘Burn in sunlight without magic ring’ ‘Takes over human Body’ or even weird things like ‘Has purple tongue’ She shook her head and slammed the book closed. She closed her eyes and took a breath. She looked on the back seeing nothing then skimmed through trying to find an author or something but nothing came up but the very last page as ripped out. She furrowed her brows wandering what it could have been. She sighed then figured some other book could help clear things up. She looked down at all the other books and started going through them again seeing that everything else was in Japanese.

Melanie frowned then shook her head. She heard her house phone ring and jumped in surprise. She let out a breath then quickly grabbed the leather book and put everything back where she found it. She ran down the steps, book in hand, and rushed to answer the phone, “Hah-hah-hah, Hello?” She answered breathing heavily into the phone. “Not gonna ask. Hey look how fast can you get down here?” Jeremy whispered frantically sounding as if he was moving around. “Fast. Why? Whats wrong Jer?” She asked already worried. She ran upstairs with the house phone and started putting on her boots. “It’s Vicki. I already called Matt but she’s acting crazy. I think she’s really messed up this time and I don’t know what to do!” He said frantically sounding so scared for Vicki. “Okay, Okay Calm down Jer. She’ll be fine. I’m on my way.” She said then hung up. She hid her book in the fake fire place in her room across from her bed. She rushed and grabbed her keys then left the house in record time.
