After making sure no one had followed me into the basement vaults of the organization, I began to let my guard down again. Even though I wasn't going to show my sister how down I was, I didn't have to play the strong one with her all the way through either. She was my only remaining family in this world. If I couldn't be who I really was with her, who else could I be with?

Since it was already late, I crept past the other compartments as quietly as possible. In the past, the basement was probably used as an archive for the various areas within the building, which is why each individual compartment could be locked. Back then I guess privacy still had a meaning, nowadays rather less. Almost in the last corner my sister was housed, so she didn't have too much contact with the other prisoners. Down here were really the poorest of all souls housed.

Hybrids, which were already infected by the virus so far that they would die soon anyway or disobedient ones who did not want to listen and were completely mutilated at some point. In the midst of these sorry creatures my sister was forced to spend her daily life. Only rarely did Marco allow me to take her upstairs and enjoy the warm rays of the sun for a while.

"Hey my little Lia, how are you today?", I asked softly into the darkness. Shortly after, a small, soft light ignited in the cabin and my sister's bright eyes looked at me. The light came from a small flashlight I had surreptitiously slipped her and regularly supplied her with batteries. Her long, straight black hair made her hard to see in low light, but her longer white dress shone all the more.

"Lavea, I was beginning to think you weren't coming in at all today. Not that I know how much time has really passed, but it sure seemed like a long time," she greeted me, stepping as close as she could to her bars. Since she didn't get much food she was very petite, but maybe that was just because of our genes, since I was also rather short and slim. Proudly I pulled something out from behind my wings. On my way home with Lilith I came across a few berry bushes, on which I had helped myself extensively.

In fact, the desired reaction also came directly with a joyful clapping from Lia. Already as a child she loved red berries and stole secretly from the fruit bushes of our neighbors. A trait for which she was reprimanded by my father and encouraged by my mother. My parents had actually always been good parents, which is why I still didn't understand their decision at the time. Sometimes I wondered if they were still alive or had already fallen victim to the virus or something else fatal.

"Um hello, Lavea are you still present? I'm getting insanely hungry just looking at the berries, so give me some already!" my little sister brought me back to the here and now.

"Oh sorry!", I said a little embarrassed, finally reaching out to her with the sweet goodness. Eagerly she began to snack on it. It was probably better I didn't confide her what I was thinking. The loss of our parents had already hit me hard, she had been in shock for the first few days after it happened. As an eight year old, the invisible umbilical cord that still connected you to your mother and father was firmly rooted. As a thirteen-year-old, I was already more independent.

"Do they taste good? They're a little bitter for my taste, but you're quite fond of it. I'd ask you like any other normal sister what you've been up to today, but you won't have had many employment opportunities."

"In fact, I got some fabric to sew with for the first time in a long time. I think there will be enough left over to make us some new outfits."Early on, some of Marco's men had noticed how talented Lia was at tailoring, so they would occasionally furnish her with scammed fabrics to make clothes. As reserved as she was, she was still a girl. She liked to make pretty things for herself and me.
