Derek, accompanied by Meredith, was walking through the trauma scene.
Noticing a gathering of officers none spot, the couple hurried towards them, which the surgeon asking, "You guys good? You ok? Yeah, what do you got?"
"Severely severed leg but he's got his artery tied off so...something." Mumbled a paramedic.
"Yeah? Who tied off the artery?..." murmured Derek pensively, only to be interrupted by Meredith, who'd kneeled beside the man.
"Charlie." She stated, "Is was Charlie. This is her coat." She gestured towards the garment, before looking around curiously, hoping to catch a glimpse of her person.
Derek followed suit, before noticing the small girl that had accompanied his pseudo-sister earlier. Hurrying towards her, he kneeled down and asked, "Hi. You ok? Did a doctor bring you here? Huh, Charlie? Is Charlie ok?"
The little girl shook her head, and Mer, who'd kneeled beside her boyfriend, tried asking again, "It's okay sweetie. Just think. Where is she? Which way did she go? It's ok. Take your time. Take all the time you need, you're doing great. What is it?"
The child noticed a red cross sign, and lead the doctors to it.
"Ok, use your words. Where exactly is Charlie." Added Derek softly.
The little girl didn't verbally reply. Simply pointed towards the open expanse of water.
Meredith gasped in fear, as Derek quickly stripped off his jacket.
"What are you doing?" She screeched.
"Getting her out."
That was the only reply she received before he jumped in.
The blonde intern stood at the edge, heart hanging by thread. Hoping against hope that today wouldn't. Be the day as he lost two of the people who meant the most to her.
v^√√v^─√v^√v^─
Derek got out, holding a still Charlie his. arms.
The girl was freezing to the touch, and blue.
So so blue.
To the untrained eye, she looked dead, though the neurosurgeon had already found a pulse.
Weak as it was, it was there, and that was enough to have hope.
Placing her quickly in the ambulance, he and Meredith alternated in giving her chest compressions.
While one did the other, the next would do mouth-to-mouth, attempting blow enough oxygen into the girl's lungs to resuscitate her.
She was so loved. So. Loved by so many people, especially the two beside her.
She was Meredith's family. Her sister and advisor and family. She didn't think she could do it without her.
And she was, for all intents and purposes, Derek's youngest sister. She was his protegée ands confidante and the one who constantly slapped him over the head whenever he fucked up.
