It was time, the clock struck midnight, signifying that it was time for Delilah's birthday. It has been months, and quite frankly, Aska forgot about the note; he forgot about the fight and the war soon to come. The voice hasn't bothered him for a few, but he does know that Delilah has been upset recently.
He wants to make this birthday the happiest of them all, because she deserves it. No kid her age should've had to gone through two family deaths, and of course almost losing her brother. She's just 14, and deserves an awesome birthday!
As the young king grabbed streamers that were decorated to look like little paintings of cats. The boy had hired two people to make them from the poor side of the kingdom. One was a girl his age, the other was a young boy half the age of Delilah. They did a great job painting so he gave them a tip of 60 bucks, and it was much appreciated.
Anything for his sister, he remind himself as he set the streamers up on the walls and lanterns. He begun to grab the plates that had also been decorated but by two little girls who were cousins. They were a little younger than the boy who had helped with the cats, and one had pink hair. The other was some sort of hybrid who was maybe a dirty blonde at best, much like Delilah's fantasy books she reads.
He knew the kids from an old family friend named Eni, and of course his sibling Eno. As he set the plates out he put birthday hats next to them; no big designs on them like the plates and streamers, just a plain black and white ombre. "Almost done," the young king hummed in satisfaction.
All that was left was the cake that the best town medic, Hanaka, created. Of course with the help of a friend, because baking cakes are difficult. It was decorated to look like an apple blossom, Aska found it weird but anything's for his sister that he loved to death.
He loves her to death.
——
Delilah had been told to stay in her room, so she did. She was reading her typical fantasy books, one of which was a series of characters who died in a kingdom, and came back resurrected as completely different species.
Happy last birthday.
What makes you say that? She hummed in her mind as she continued to read.
Damn, you are stupider than I thought.
You are the one who invaded my mind, you can see my thoughts.
No I can't.
That's stupid, anyways did you know that Tanuki's can make a huge ball with their tail?!
No- no they quite literally can't. You really need to stop reading fantasy books.
Hmm, suit yourself. She hummed to 'herself' as she drew the Tanuki in her stories. Her stories often consisted of this Tanuki character that she loved.
They really chose to wrong mind to invade.
——
The guests rung the doorbell, as Aska knew they would, and he ran to open the door. He smiled and hugged all the people who helped them throughout life.
"Welcome! Thank you for coming! Treat yourself to our fridge!" Aska smiled widely, the first time he has in a while.
The guests were running around the house happy and giddyily giggling. This sound draught out Delilah from her man cave she called a room, and she sprinted down the stairs, almost tripping but catching herself by continuing to run. She knocked herself into the wall as she couldn't stop her momentum.
Well, she almost did, but someone caught her. Delilah looked up and started crying as she hugged the elder person. "Hey kiddo, it's alright."
The girl smiled as she went down on Delilah's level and wiped her tears with a handkerchief. "Lilith! I've missed you!"
Aska glared back and smiled softly, winking at Lilith. Lilith, not seeing the wink, continued to pamper Delilah.
Aska smiled, his sister could finally be happy. She wouldn't have to worry, and there wouldn't be any fights anymore! Everyone was getting along!
——
Everyone sat at the table, all holding hands with the person who was sat by them. They all said a prayer, as Hanaka pleaded for them to, and smiled once they finished. "Phu!" The girl from earlier laughed.
"That kid's weird—" Aska whispered to his sister, who snorted.
"Now, to the birthday girl," Lilith started, soon being interrupted during her pause.
"To the birthday girl, we cut the cake! Delilah, would you like to do the honors?" Aska asked his sister, who gleamfully nodded and cut slice by slice. She repositions her hands a few times so she can cut the pieces straight.
Delilah is such a big girl that not only could she cut her own cake, but she also plated everyone else's. Everyone thanked her as they began to eat the Neapolitan cake. Delilah smiled, and hugged everyone whilst she thanked them for coming.
"Delilah is so cool!" She heard a kid mutter in awe as they held Eno's sleeve. Eno simply nodded and went back to eating.
The princess's eyes watered from this as she felt her eyes begin to sting; her nose was becoming red as she sniffled. She wasn't sick at all, not anything close to it. These were happy stings, soon-to-be happy tears as they started to roll down.
"Thank you guys," her breathing hitched as she tried to not embarrass herself.
"Awe, Delilah it's alright to be happy," Hanaka smiled softly.
That was all the confirmation Delilah needed, as she continued to wail.
——
After everyone left, Delilah and Aska were watching TV. Something didn't sit right with Delilah. She felt as though something was missing, but what was it? She had her amazing birthday, she had her amazing brother? What more was there. What could she have forgotten.
Delilah turned her head to Aska, who had done the same at the same exact time. They were both confused on what they forgot, until the heard an explosion. Then Aska knew what was wrong.
He knew why there was a pit in his stomach, that made him feel guilt. He knew why he was getting the feeling of forgetting something. He knew why his sister felt the same. Now she knew too. She knew what they had forgotten.
"The war..." they mumble at the same time, as their windows break and people run in.
