Chapter XI - Never Say Never
[Dedicated Song: Jaden - Still in Love]
[25 March 2018]
[London, Victoria College]
[08:04]Never say never. Those three words held quite possibly the strongest significance they ever had in this particular situation. The words were a crowbar - capable of unlocking vaults that had been locked with the key disposed of. Here I was now, desperately searching for the key I threw away. All because I had almost completely sealed my fate. Never say never.
They were right because people changed their minds all the time. I could not believe that I now found myself back in Victoria. After all the declarations I had made to never set foot in this place ever again, I was now ironically looking for a way I could return. My mind was still fuzzy.
I still did not believe that I had texted Conrad and Elina to meet me at the College's gates, and after a bit of internal debating, the invitation extended to Kuyeya as well. Before I knew it, the invitation had spread like a wildfire and now all of my friends were coming. My friends had desperately begged to come and watch me possibly embarrass myself for the third time in a row. I was shooting for the hat-trick. As of now, I had already found myself at the gate, seated on one of the benches that had stood there for years. I was lazily scrolling through my phone and awaiting the arrival of Kuyeya, Elina, and Conrad, and it was not long before I felt a tap on my shoulder.
From the simple contact that was established, I could already tell that Conrad was behind me. That was how well we knew each other, that was how strong our bond was. There was also a certain feeling that overwhelmed me whenever I touched Conrad or the other way around. It was as if someone was pumping electricity through my body, but it somehow felt good. That same feeling had entered my body for a fraction of a second once more.
I turned around to face him, mimicking the bright smile on my face, even though I felt like anything else but that. "Ivanna, how've you been?" Conrad asked me, his hands moving much quicker than the last time we had met. It seemed he was practicing. "Progress, but still, I've been better. Way better." I responded and he nodded attentively. It was apparent that I had seen better days, even amid all the chaos in my life.
Conrad, despite his ability to pay attention to detail, chose not to go any further than a greeting. I assumed he thought that I was better, given my decision to come to Victoria. But little did he know... "Don't let the nerves get to you, you've done this before multiple times." Conrad conveyed his message, an encouraging smile accompanying it. "I've never done this on barely any ability to hear and a damn wishbone."
Conrad frowned in response, noting the lack of confidence in my body language. "I can see your point, but it's brave enough that you even came back. Given how you never wanted to at any capacity." I frowned at the subtle mention of my past incidences in Victoria but tried my best to make sure that I did not show any hostility. "I guess you're right, but bravery won't bring back my hearing or any of the trust I once had in music.
I can't even honestly tell you why I'm here." I was telling the truth. I still did not believe that I was back in Victoria, preparing to possibly play a song without any of my hearing at all. The more I delved into it, the more I realized how terrifying of a thought it was, and I was mere minutes away from it. In a shocking turn of events, Conrad's hand soon rested on mine.
I could feel it again.
I could feel my body nearly shivering as the same electric feeling washed over me the moment our hands intertwined. For a moment, my mind had simply stopped, because I had no recollection of what had just taken place until I saw a hand wave in front of me. I blinked a couple of times before regaining my composure, flashing a slightly nervous smile on Conrad's face. He raised thumbs with what appeared to be a worried expression and I vigorously nodded. I was still not clear as to what had happened to me.
