I cautiously get up and walk quietly to the door. Either Xander is asleep or refuses to answer the door. He can be so helpful at times like these. I look through the little peephole and see Beck standing outside, drenched from the rain.
I open the door and he looks at me sheepishly. "Hey," is all he says. I narrow my eyes at him. Why is he here? "Come on in." His parents must be part of the search group too. "Thanks. Sorry for dropping in like this.
We walk into the kitchen and I begin to make coffee. I see Beck has a duffel bag with him. Oh no. No, no no. "What's with the bag?" I ask suspiciously. "I have to leave early tomorrow morning. I know you and Xander do as well. It was getting lonely being by myself so I figured I would come over here." Xander must have told him about our parents.
I hand him a cup of coffee. "Thanks. I am actually not a big fan of plain coffee but it is fine if that's all you have." I know now is not a great time to be rude, but I can not help felling exasperated. "This is all we have, Beck. If you do not want it tell me and I'll through it out!" I snap. Beck just gives me his usual smirk, picks up the cup and sniffs the coffee. Sniffs it. I sigh. No winning here.
After a long stretch of scilence, I say, "Isn't it a bit odd that after ten years our parents go missing? Why now?" "Maybe they were getting close to figuring something out." I was thinking the exact same thing. I give Beck a small smile. He smiles back at me. "Maybe we should try to be friends? I mean, we have to go through this and I don't see any use of going through it alone." I think about Beck's offer. The truth is that I would not be going through this alone. I have Xander. Beck has no one. I feel a twinge of sorrow for Beck. "Sure. Let's try being friends. Under one condition." "Oh no. What have I gotten myself into?" Beck says looking unsure of his offer. I continue on, "If this whole friend thing does not work out, we will still be decent and not turn on each other." Beck's arrogant smile is back "Sure."
"Can I sleep on your couch tonight?" Beck asks. "Why not?" I reply. I go to the closet and grab an extra pillow and blanket. "Thanks. You don't have to do this you know." "I am aware. However, we are friends now and I genuinely want to help you out." Beck gives me a playful smile. "This is so strange. You are actually being nice to me." Beck chuckles to himself. "Do not act like it's so foreign. Everyone loves you." I tease. "Yeah. Everyone but you." Beck says pretending to act hurt.
"If you get hungry there is food in the kitchen. There is not much food left since I packed most of it." I inform Beck. "I am not that hungry. The coffee you gave me was horrendous and I do not think I will be able to eat for days," Beck teases. I decide not to fight it.
"Okay, Beck see you in the morning. We, Xander and I are waking up at four thirty." "Alrighty. See you then. Goodnight, Allison." "Goodnight, Beck." I say back to him smiling. Maybe having Beck as a friend is not such a bad idea.
It is now one in the morning. I am getting three and a half hours of sleep. Great. I hope I will wake up in time. I set my seven alarm clocks to four thirty AM. I get back into bed and fall asleep instantly.
