I stare straight ahead, looking at no one. Beck is still leaning heavily on me and I am beginning to stagger under the weight. "Here, let me help you." An official tells me. "Not a chance." I snap. "Suit yourself." He responds with a shrug.
"Thanks." Beck says giving me a weak smile. "No problem." The least I can do is help Beck. I may not like him at all but it is my fault that he got hit by that car. I should have realized it was a test sooner. Xander. I wonder if he is okay.
We finally exit the thick forest and the building from before we took off comes into view. The car door is still opened and our bags are inside.
"We are going to take him to our hospital. You are to go to-" I cut him off. "No. I will walk down with you and Beck. After I know he is okay I will go and see everyone else." The official looks like he is loosing his patience with me. "Miss... uh..." "Allison," I provide. "Oh yes, of course. Allison you have to go to the gathering room."
How unimaginative can these people get? "No. I refuse to go to the gathering room until I know that Beck is okay." I insist. "Allison, really I am fine. Just go, do what they tell you to. Do not get into anymore trouble." Beck tells me. For some reason this makes me even more angry. "NO! I will not leave you with them, not until I know you are okay."
The officials look enraged but give in. "I guess we just have to let her come down to the hospital with us. After you know if he will be okay or not, you have to go to the gathering room, okay?" The one who seems to be in charge tells me. I smirk at them. "Sounds good to me."
We walk through the large doorway. I look around and take in my surroundings. The walls are painted bright white and there is a mirror on part of the left wall. This place does not seem very welcoming to me. It looks like there is a thin sheet of glass in front of us. No one else seems bothered by it. We walk through it with ease. "What was that?" I ask. "Just security precautions. You do not need to know more than that."
We turn left and enter a steel elevator. I have not been in many elevators before. My school does not allow us to use them and I usually opt to take the stairs anywhere else anyway. After the elevator descends for about 20 seconds it stops. The doors open and I see a few doctors milling around.
One walks up to me. "What happened to him?" He asks. "Beck was hit by a car." I inform him. "Okay. Well you can wait here." He says motioning to a wooden bench. "We will constantly keep you updated. "Thank you." I tell him and reluctantly let him take Beck into one of the rooms.
Most of the officials have left but one sits next to me on either side of me on the bench. They don't trust me. I have to somehow regain their trust. I refuse to talk to the officials and just stare at the framed picture on the wall. It is of about a dozen people with stiff smiles. They must be the founders of this place.
It has been over an hour since Beck has gone into the room and I am restless. "What is taking the doctors so long? Is Beck okay?" I demand. The officials just shrug. I bet they don't even care. I try to think of other things but I can't. I need to know if Beck is okay.
Half an hour later a doctor comes out of the room Beck is in. I give him a questioning look. Maybe I will finally get some answers. His expression is grim and I feel my heart drop. "I have an update," He tells me. "Please follow me."
