My college is starting soon so the updates might be slow for a while😐

Zayn’s POV:

The walk out of the castle has been filled with thick silence. I know what my ministry was capable of, but I didn’t realize they will go to this extent to kill me for that.

I struggle to believe it. That they would do something like this. I’m supposed to be their King, but I feel nothing like that. I’m now running for my life with Liam out of all people and I’m close to losing my mind.

Where am I supposed to go now? Where am I supposed to hide? I don’t know any place than Liam’s town. And the woods.

But the woods? Are they even close to safe at this hour?

I breathe out, trying to calm my racing heart and wipe my sweaty palms in my suit. Crap. I’m still in this traditional suit.

“I need to change this” I voice out to Liam. And he is startled out of his thoughts. Things with him are no better, instead he looks at me like I’m the villain of his life. It hurts too much.

Without a word, he just nods and goes back to his thoughts. “What did you do?”

“Huh?”

“What did you do to make them want to kill you?” he asks obscurely. It hurts me even more when he has no clue of what I did for him. Just for him.

“I used my chance to announce fair taxation system in the kingdom. From today, every royal must pay tax like every other commoner, it has become a law” I tell him bitterly. And realization flashes across his eyes swiftly. And guilt takes over his features.

“Why would you do that?”

“I think you know the answer” I tell, finally coming to the end of the passageway. Pushing the door open to the outside world, I climb up the stairs. I don’t bother holding out a hand to him, I know he won't take it.

“Why would they kill you for that?” He asks softly after shutting the door.

“I changed something that has been followed for decades and decades and it was working well for their advantage” I tell him “And if they pay tax regularly now, they could lose so much money to the King.”

“Did you know the consequences of this beforehand?” he asks, his eyes watchful. “Did you know they won't like it?”

“Of course” I say “I knew they won't react well. But I didn’t know it’s going to get me killed in process”

“Let’s go” is all he says and starts leading the way towards the silent town. It’s dark, the faint moon light bathing everything in blue. I have no idea where he is leading me, but I know it’s going to be somewhere safe.

We walk through the familiar pathway towards the woods, our footsteps filling the silence. The grass brushes against my ankles as I walk and it reminds me of the times I spent lying on them beside Liam. I shiver when the cold breeze brushes past me and looking up, I see the dark sky dotted with stars and the moon hiding behind the grey clouds in almost shy way.

Realization hits me that I have never seen night sky outside the castle. Never witnessed the sky as whole, the only view I ever got was from my window seat.

It’s beautiful, like I expected. And it almost makes me smile given the situation.

“Zayn”

I look down to meet Liam’s eyes, standing yards away from me.

“Why did you stop walking?” he questions “We don’t have much time, come on”

Begrudgingly, I start walking towards him again, stealing glances at the sky. He looks up and back at me, a frown set on his face.
