Bitch. What an absolute fucking bitch.
A hot bitch, but a bitch nonetheless.
The next day at the breakfast table, I said nothing as I picked at my shrimp and grits, avoiding the eyes of my family members.
"Don't play with your food," Dad nudged me, adjusting the orange shades that rested atop his head before they could fall into his bowl, "Wouldn't want it to get cold and be harder for you to wash, now, would we?"
He'd said it jokingly, but it still stung.
On the other end of the table, my siblings argued and bantered.
"I'm just saying, Joshua is not as cute as Cameron," my little sister Diamond said to the other, Shanice.
"Um," Shanice replied, "Who died and made you the cuteness expert?"
Diamond slowly glanced towards our parents. She quickly looked away when Mom glared at her, eliciting my big sister Marsha's laughter.
"Cuteness? You two are, like, 5. Why are you fighting over boys and their cuteness?" Marsha questioned through her giggles.
"Actually, I'm 11, so shut the fuck up," Shanice countered.
"Young lady!" our parents chimed at her in unison, throwing my older brother Anthony into a fit of hysterics when he saw Shanice flinch.
"Little Miss 'i'M iN mIdDlE sChOoL' thinks she's untouchable still, huh?" Anthony teased her, and Shanice stuck her tongue out.
"At least I'm not old like you!" Shanice retaliated, "Seriously, how far do you have to scroll to get to the year you were born on social media?"
"Damn!" Marsha cackled, amicably patting Shanice's back.
"We're getting off topic!" Diamond scoffed, "Joshua obviously has the best smile. I heard from Brittany who heard from Talia that he's a good kisser, too!"
"Kisser?" Anthony reiterated, "You're taking this from who? Some kids who practice on their teddy bears?"
"That's how furries are born," Marsha added.
Mom and Dad only shook their heads with exasperation, each checking the time on their separate watches.
Diamond turned to me, "Maybe Kelita will tell me I'm right!"
She proceeded to show me two pictures on her phone of snot-nosed, dusty children.
"Well, which one is better?" Diamond shook the device in my face.
"Hmm. That one is..." I opened my Notes app, "...a toddler. And the other one is..." I did it again, "Huh! What do you know? Also a toddler!"
Diamond scoffed and turned away, "Whatever! You're no help! And we are not toddlers! We aren't babies anymore. Stop saying that!"
I cooed at her, "You'll always be my baby sister!"
