Chapter 20
I woke up the next day feeling even worse about Ed. I had a shower, trying to feel better, but it didn’t do much to improve my mood at all. After getting changed, I actually had time to eat my breakfast.
“Sophia! You’re down early today, well…” she looked at the kitchen clock, “about ten minutes earlier than normal.”
I smiled a little, pouring myself some cornflakes.
“Are you OK?” she asked, leaning on the kitchen counter.
“No, I can’t do it - this isn’t me, I know it’s not. I just don’t like that feeling - knowing that I have to tell him soon. Knowing he’ll be crushed.” I quivered.
“Come here” she said comfortingly, coming over to me and wrapping me in her arms.
“No, I don’t need sympathy, I’m a horrible person - I don’t deserve it.” I sobbed.
“Now now, no need for that, you made a mistake, and like I said last night, everyone learns from their mistakes” she said, rubbing my back.
I sniffed and wiped my eyes with my worn school jumper.
“You need to end it with him, this can’t go on love.” she sighed.
“I know, I will today, promise.”
“Now, eat your cereal, we need to go believe it or not.”
“Ok” I whispered, spooning cereal into my mouth.
*****
“Good luck” my Mum said as she kissed me goodbye.
“Bye Mum.”
I walked into school, and to Ed’s form room.
I looked through the window in the door. He was there. I walked in, and he walked up to me.
“Soph, you alright? I got you something.”
“What? No Ed.”
“Oh, don’t worry, it’s just a bracelet.” he said, pulling a hand-made wool bracelet out of his pocket and placing it in my hand.
“Ed, I can’t do this.” I whispered, a tear falling down my cheek.
“What? Why? Is it the bracelet? Maybe it’s too much.”
“I…I…used you”
He froze.
“I like Al, I wanted to make him jealous, I feel awful, I don’t mind if you hate me, because no-one can hate me as much as I hate myself right now. You deserve better than me, I am truly sorry, I am.”
“Oh. Right.”
“You’re an amazing person, one day you’ll find a girl who’s perfect, and isn’t a witch like me.”
My hands were shaking as I placed the bracelet back into his cold hands.
“Stop Soph, I forgive you, I mean I didn’t expect it, but I appreciate your honesty, really I do,” his voice was quiet and flat.
“Thank you so much Ed, I know I can’t expect it now, but I’d love if one day we can still be friends.” I bowed my head.
He nodded.
“I’m so sorry Ed.” I whispered, as I left the room.
I still felt like a witch, but I was relieved I’d talked to him.
*****
I told Mel what happened straight after.
“Well done babe, I’m proud of you, I’m sorry I told you to do it.” she sighed.
“Please, for the millionth time, I deserve no praise, what I did was horrible, and I did it under my own steam, it’s not YOUR fault Mel.”
She gave me a sympathetic smile.
“Stop talking everyone and write down the date, Wednesday the thirtieth of May.” Mrs.Blackmoore - our Maths teacher shouted.
“Soph! You know there’s only 28 days until your birthday, if you don’t count today.” Mel exclaimed.
“Oh yeah” I said, tapping my pen on the paper.
“What are you asking for?”
“I‘d really love another dog”
“Oh cool, what breed?” she asked me.
“Well my Dad and I want a Beagle, but my Mum wants a Labrador”
“They are both such adorable breeds, you should get a girl and breed Marmite!” she screamed with excitement.
“Do you ever think of anything else?” I grinned.
“Oh shut up” she snorted.
“Melanie and Sophia, stop talking and explain Pythagoras to the class” Mrs.Blackmoore shouted at us.
I ended up explaining it because there was no way on planet Earth that Mel could, no offence.
“So are you going to the school Fayre on Saturday?”
I shrugged, resuming tapping my pencil on the paper.
“Why are you so upset?” she sighed.
“I don’t know, maybe ‘cus I just totally used a sweet, harmless guy?” I said sarcastically.
“Soph! Cheer up, I mean; yeah what you did wasn’t the nicest, but you’ve said sorry, you can’t go back, so live on! You have your chance with Al now! Take it!”
“I suppose.”
“Smile, and do it. Ask him out. You can babe, if anything; you’ve shown how mature you are by coming clean with Ed and apologizing. Please, for me, I mean I wish you could see how obvious it is, he’s waiting for you hun.”
“I don’t know.”
“Soph!” she screamed - literally.
“Melanie, detention after school, just be quiet!” Mrs.Blackmoore screamed.
“I did that for you” she whispered.
I smiled, not feeling convinced about the whole idea.
