Chapter 14
The week after the skirt incident, Al wasn't in. Everyone asked Nicki where he was, but she said she wasn't allowed to say, although I suspected she didn't actually know.
"What's up babe?" Mel asked me in art the Monday after. "You're miserable!"
"I'm not Mel, at least I don't think I am" I sighed.
"Are you missing Al?!" she giggled, dancing around me with a paintbrush.
"No!" I hissed.
"OK, OK. So what are you doing for the Art exhibition?"
"I don't know, I don't even know what materials I'm using yet. You?"
"I'm going to sketch a flower, and then I'll use oil pastels to tonal shade It." she said, very certain of what she wanted to achieve.
"Cool" I said in exasperation, tapping my pencil on my blank piece of paper as I said it.
"You should do an explosion, Soph" Mel screeched.
"What?"
"Y'know, do loads of images in one painting, like an explosion of colour and tone, it will create a positive atmosphere, and will stand out from the crowd!" She said, dancing around me once again.
"OK, I'll try anyway." I mumbled, it was worth a shot.
I was starting to plan out my ideas now, there would be loads of images, mostly words like 'LOL', and they would be all over the page, I could have swirls, smiley faces, hearts and other funky shapes, and like Mel said, it would be like an explosion of colour and tone.
I started lightly sketching on my paper, and it did look quite cool. I just needed to start adding colour. But paint wouldn't be strong enough, I needed something dark, but a bit messy to give it a rough-effect. Spray paint.
I walked to the equipment drawers and the words: 'Aerosol Cans' were scribbled on one of the drawers. I opened it, and there were loads of different coloured cans. I picked up 10, ranging from bright red to dark blue, and brought them to my desk. I practiced a little, and started spraying. I paused for a couple of seconds, only to see Al walk in.
"Al!" everyone screamed, running over to him.
"Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls! Please, sit down!" Mr.Mochs, our art teacher groaned.
Everyone walked back to their seats, and Nicki talked to Al in the doorway for a while.
But Al looked different. He had darkened eyes, and had got even thinner. His skin looked even paler, and he wasn't smiling like he used to.
"Soph! Bless! You still haven't got over him have ya babe?!" Mel shouted, way too loud.
"Mel! Be quiet! Is it me or does he look really ill?" I replied.
"Yeh, he always does though, that's probably why he was off school"
I nodded, and carried on spray painting.
"Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls!" Mr.Mochs called. "Homework is to finish your pieces of artwork for the art exhibition on the last day of school, the 1st of April. Don't forget! Oh, and remember, you can come to the art rooms at lunch times to borrow materials!"
Everyone groaned, and scribbled down the homework into their planners.
