It was quickly becoming usual for Kageyama to have Hinata's word stuck in his head.
Do you like girls or boys, Kageyama?
Who the fuck asks questions like that? Why is he even paying attention to it?
It doesn't matter which he likes, Kageyama decides. Girls, boys, both. Who cares? If he thinks about it over and over, he'll stress and have a sexuality crisis or something like that. He doesn't want to go through that... but he's damn curious about the answers to Hinata's question.
For the rest of the week, Kageyama talks to Hinata as little as possible. That still means that Hinata is the person he talks to most, though. The wild orange haired boy seemed to understand Kageyama was in a thoughtful mood because he was a bit quieter than usual. Of course, Kageyama could be wrong and the idiot just has his own idiotic things to think about.
It's Friday that changes their silence.
Kageyama is just sliding his shoes on when he hears his mother's voice from behind him.
"Tobio!"
"Hm?" Kageyama looks back. "Yes, mother?"
She smiles and gently pats his shoulder. "Remember to be home straight after practise. We're going to your grandmother's for the bank holiday. Ooh, and don't forget your father said you can bring a friend. Have you asked Hinata-kun, yet?"
He blinks at her. "Hinata...?"
"Well, you are asking him, aren't you? He's your closest friend, Tobio. You need to stop hiding him from us. Invite him. If his parents wish to meet us beforehand, bring them over for dinner tonight. Warn me first, though. All right?"
"Uhh... Yeah."
"Have a good day at school, Tobio!" She beams and kisses the top of his head before she heads back into the house.
Kageyama stands there for a few seconds, staring at the doorway where his mother's frame just disappeared. Ask Hinata to his grandmother for three day (two night) trip? Even without this elephant in the room tension between them, he would be torn.
Hinata is a dumbass and he'd never acknowledge the boy as his friend. Not to anyone. It wasn't his fault that his mother just assumed they were friends because they worked well together on the team, after all.
That being said... The idea of having a few days to talk to Hinata without the interruptions of girls and their teammates, of maybe, just maybe, asking Hinata if he had any solutions on how to go about discovering his sexuality... The idea of those thing were tempting enough that he's consideration asking the idiot to his grandmother's beach house.
with a sigh, Kageyama sets off for school. He jogs there, wanting to keep his body and mind focused on something about than Hinata for a little while.
Breathe, in, out. Left foot, right foot. In, out.
Would Hinata agree if he asked...?
Breathe. In, out. Left foot, right foot. In, out.
Kageyama thinks he would.
Breathe. In, o-
"Damn it! Why can I not stop thinking about that dumbass?!" Kageyama yells, kicking a nearby bin.
Suddenly realising what he's exclaimed and done, Kageyama looks around himself. Pleased to find no one around, he sighs in relief before he sets off jogging once again.
By the time Kageyama has reached school and is stood outside the club room, he's made his choice.
He'll ask Hinata to join him on this trip and somehow get the orange haired boy to tell him if he's any closer to figuring this boys or girls thing out. It shouldn't be too hard to get Hinata talking - the boy ever shuts up. The only thing that Kageyama needs to be wary of is how he asks. He doesn't want Hinata to know he's questioning his own sexuality. That will just end in Hinata asking him about it everyday. He knows that Hinata is an idiot but he'll still see through Kageyama if he's not careful about how he asks.
There's a beach by his grandmother's house and Hinata is likely to want to go swimming or to play volleyball on the beach if they can gather enough people somehow. Swimming seems more likely, though. Maybe Kageyama can get it out of him by teasing him about boys in swimsuits.
That sounds like a good way to make Hinata irritated and therefore even less observant than he already is. He'll be too busy shouting at Kageyama to realise that he's been lured into discussing it.
Kageyama smirks.
"Eeh. What's with the scary face, Kageyama?" Hinata's voice startles the taller boy, making him jump as he twists to glare at his orange haired teammate.
"What?! My face isn't scary!"
"It is!" Hinata insists. "You look like you just finished plotting a murder and are ridiculously happy with the results."
Kageyama growls and reaches out to grip his hair but Hinata ducks out of the way.
"Oi. Hinata. Kageyama." Tanaka calls and waves to them when they look down over the railing.
"Tanaka!" Hinata waves enthusiastically.
Kageyama rolls his eyes. They saw each other yesterday and it's hardly a surprise that they're seeing each other now. Both of them are so over the top. Kageyama wonders how their senpai put up with them all - especially when including Noya. They're all so noisy. Although, Kageyama supposes that you grow used to it. He's used to them and even Tsukishima grew used to them... Still, that didn't stop Kageyama from what to shove a sock in Hinata's mouth.
Before long, everyone arrives and they get morning practise underway. It's as they're packing up that Kageyama decides to ask. If he asked now, Hinata would have the whole day to think and to ask his parents if they're okay with their son going away for three days and two nights.
"Oi, Hinata."
Hinata freezes. "Eh? Wh-what did I do wrong this time? I only missed once!"
Kageyama sighs but decides not to comment on Hinata's fear of him. "What are you doing over the bank holiday?"
Hinata narrows his eyes, suspiciously. Kageyama frowns back at him. What the hell is he suspicious about? There is no way he can know his plan!
"Why do you want to know?" Hinata asks, his voice low and unlike his usual upbeat tone.
"I have to go to my grandmother's house... My mum said I can invite a friend..." Kageyama doesn't look at him as he speaks, not wanting Hinata to think that he wants him there. Even if he sort of does...
"Oooh!" Hinata laughs, scratching the back of his head. "I see!"
Kageyama raises an eyebrow. Why isn't he suspicious anymore?
"My parents said if your mum and dad-"
"I can't come." Hinata interrupts him.
"Oh. Why not?"
"Why do you care?!" Hinata shouts, suddenly aggressive again.
"I don't care, dumbass!" Kageyama shouts back at him. "But my mum will probably ask. I'll just tell her you're busy." and before Hinata can shout at him again, Kageyama leaves the gym to go to class.
Throughout the day, Kageyama excepts Hinata to approach him and say he's changed his mind about going to his grandmother's. He doesn't. Kageyama waits at the end of after school practise too, excepting Hinata to walk with him and say he changed his mind. However, Hinata rushes past him and hops on his bike after practise, zooming down the street, before Kageyama can say a word to him about anything.
