Fitz- Assignment Denied

The wishful thinking of a friend, I want to help but I can't. I want to make Sophie happy, I've missed her ever since and now I don't think she talks to anyone. I mean it, Keefe was an amazing friend but he's going to be the reason I can't be with Sophie.

I've been turning down this same assignment from the council since last year. One year into my being an Emissary and they are having me look for my missing friend. I can't face him, he'll steal her again if he comes back and I'd rather wait for her to get over it and just see sense with me.

I walk into my meeting with the council, they're probably gonna tell me that I have to go looking for Keefe and I'll turn it down. I turn it down as much for Sophie as I do myself. She's been searching for him and the less conspicuous the search is maybe she can find him, since he doesn't want to be found. She's been busy with the Elite Levels so she probably thinks I'll resume the search.

"Lord Vacker," Emery says as I enter the hall. I take a quick bow then seat myself.

I look over at Oralie the kindest of  Councillors to realize she seems stressed. She looks away from me with... is that disgust?

"We understand your reason of not taking the assignment for Sophie's benefit but we all think that she needs help, and with your privileges as a very trusted Emissary you could help her greatly. We believe the stress is getting to her," Emery starts.

I bite back a laugh. I don't think she wants my help, not yet at least, I think to myself.

I start with my same reason as always. "But here's the thing, I don't think you do understand. She doesn't talk to anyo-"

All the Councillor's Imparters decide to interrupt me with a ringing chime.

Bronte is the only one who answers as we all listen. It's Magnate Leto, Foxfire's principal.

"Leto, what a surprise," Bronte greets.

"Yes, quite. We have some... issues of sorts," Magnate Leto says. Everyone waits for him to continue. "We've had a complication at the Elite Towers."

"WHAT?" I burst. Sophie's in the Elite Towers, and Bianna, and Dex, and Linh, Tam, Marella, and Maruca too. Probably more.

"Mr. Vacker what a surprise," Leto answers to my lash out, "I've checked over I'm assured that all the prodigies were able to leap away before the initial collapse-"

"Collapse?" Me and all 12 Councillors yell questioningly.

"Yes," Leto cringed, "Has anyone seen Lady Cadence recently?"

"The Elite Towers collapsed and you're worried about Lady Cadence? You're kidding me!" I huff, "I'm coming to Foxfire."

I leap away before he could answer.
