Clay is a scientist, and a good one at that. His research is almost unmatched... almost. He's the lead scientist on a government project, but when another scientist joins the team, his likeability is challenged. George Davidson, the only man who Clay is jealous of― the only man who ramps up Clay's anger.

or

Clay is a little more than jealous of a new coworker.

"Let's welcome the newest member of our team, George Davidson!" Karl exclaims, patting the new scientist on his shoulder.

Clay studies him from behind a table, mouth twisted in a frown. It's barely the first day and everyone seems to love George. Clay has never been one to share the attention, he prefers to be at the top of the food chain.

His team likes him, Clay knows that, but everyone seems to be drawn to the newest member. With dark, curly hair and soft eyes, George is new. He's fresh blood, something the team needs, but Clay already despises him.

George speaks, his voice like honey, "Hello everyone, I'm so happy I could join the team! I'm honored that Clay chose me to be the lead researcher."

Clay scoffs, rolling his eyes. When he went over George's profile, he had no idea that George would be so... so like this. It's almost too much for Clay to handle. He feels doomed, like his fate has already been decided.

But he isn't about to let George steal his spotlight away. Who cares if he is the smartest scientist in the list of scientists that Clay had reviewed? Clay won't let George take everything from him.

His eyes study George once more, scowling at his navy blue sweater under his perfectly straight lab coat. His mouth is gentle, easily smiling, and words flow out with little effort, making those around him smile and laugh.

And to top it all off, George has glasses tucked in his lab coat pocket. Of fucking course. Of course he has glasses. Clay already knows George probably pulls them off, and he looks away with lips curled in disgust.

Clay snaps at the team, distracting them from George, "Alright, everyone get back to work. We aren't getting paid to socialize."

Nods are his response and people clad in white lab coats rush back to their work areas. Clay's too busy reviewing a stack of papers to notice a presence. He's holding a file, scanning over the assignments of the week when a hand rests on his forearm.

"Thank you," that sugar-coated voice speaks and Clay has to hold back an eye roll, "for giving me this opportunity to work here."

"Well you're already failing," Clay snipes, shaking George's slender hand off his arm with more force than necessary and snapping the file he's holding closed. "Get to work."

George blinks, surprised at Clay's reaction. He takes an unsure step back, clearly unused to people reacting to him like this. Clay laughs humorlessly. "What? Not used to people fawning over you? Go to your station and work before I fire you."

"Yes, of course," George replies, confused, and walks to his station.

Clay doesn't feel the least bit bad and he feels better knowing that he does have the power to fire George. Clay watches over the scientists, walking for station to station. He double checks their work and adds some of his own input.

He skips over George's station, heading to Karl's, but George speaks up, "Clay? Can you double check something for me?"

Clay stiffens at his name falling from George's lilting accent, but he turns around with tense shoulders and a frown. George backs up for him and Clay looks through his microscope, studying the mineral. He looks at the paper George had scribbled on, his cursive flowing so smoothly that it makes Clay scoff.
