Tony had stayed the night at Emily's

Tony had stayed the night at Emily's. He'd received a text or two from Aro throughout the night, something that made Tony's will to stay at his home waver. He was consulting Emily on regards to if he should return to Volterra without half the details involved.

There was still the lingering thought, the what if... what if Carlisle came back?

His heart shuddered at the thought of being gone. Tony knew, at that moment, he had to wait. He could watch Bella stuff Jacob into her life as a replacement, she could fool her sick heart... but he couldn't. Not with his relationship between Carlisle and the Volturi Kings. Oh, what a mess he was in.

So, as any respectful teacher would, Tony continued to live between the hollow life at Forks and the comforts of La Push.

The next morning Tony found himself bundled up more than needed and sitting at a picnic table with the pack and Bella. Emily was sitting right beside him, occasionally gesturing his attention to someone who was speaking.

"Excellent. If the redhead's after Bella, we've got bait," Jared states, eyes refusing to go past Tony.

Jacob kindly threw a gardening tool at the boy which went largely ignored.

"She is not bait," Jacob defended.

"I should leave town," Bella fussed, brow pinched slightly.

"No use," Tony sighed, "You've got a pack here and a father to worry about. Hunters are different, they'll cling like a bad smell until they win or are killed."

"It is easier for us to protect you here," Sam added, "Easier to catch her too."

"No one can catch her. She can escape anything," Bella objected.

"Oooh, she has special powers," Paul mocked.

"Some of them do," Bella rebutted and Tony raised a thin brow.

"Like what... Bella?" Jacob asked.

"The mind reader you said you knew. He was a suckhead? Can they all do that?" Jared warily asked.

"Tony?" Sam pitched.

"God," Tony grimaced, "I'd get in more shit for explaining things than Bella. All I'll say is that some manifest gifts from their most powerful human attributes and some don't."

Paul ripped into Bella and Tony for protecting the vampires, Jacob defended Bella while Sam walked behind Tony and pat him on the back before hugging Emily. That ends the conversation for the day and Sam returned Tony home and promised that the pack would be protecting both the Swan's house and his.

The teacher set about marking the backlog of papers he had, somehow quickly finishing before returning to his hobby of twisting his Cullen ring on his finger. Time stopped for him, his heart beating in slow thumps against his chest. Something was going to happen, his gut twisted uncomfortably as the thought manifested.
