T-ring! T-ring! T-ring!
T-ring! T-ring! T-ri-"Hello, this is the Miyama residence."
[.....]
"Ah, Okaa-san."
[.....]
"Yes, I got the parcel. I haven't opened it yet but thank you so much."
[.....]
"No no. It's completely fine. You shouldn't rush here. Take your time."
[.....]
"Oh, um...... No, I'm not alone. I have someone with me."
[.....]
"Err, not exactly a friend but... Uh, never mind."
[.....]
"Okay, don't push yourself too hard."
[.....]
"Again, thank you so much."
[.....]
"Yes yes. Goodbye."After finishing the call, I sat in the living room where Nana had been waiting for me.
"Was it Miyama-san, Kou-chan?"
"Yeah, she was asking if I got the present and wished me saying she might not be able to call tomorrow."
"Oh. Work must be tough. Is she faring well?"
"Well, she sounded cheerful."
"That's a relief."
Just now, my mother who was away on a business trip had called and wished me a 'Happy Birthday'. Though she was busy, she remembered my birthday and made the effort to send me a gift.
It had always been like that. Sometimes she missed my birthdays, sometimes she didn't. When she did, she was really apologetic. But she never forgot to get me a present.
My mother might be away from home most of the time, however, she was there when I needed her most. She was even ready to give up her dream job to be with me after Nana died because I couldn't stop mourning. Fortunately, she didn't.
Okaa-san loved me and cared about me. She never failed to make me realize that. I was truly grateful for her.
But it seemed that all I caused her was trouble. I wasn't the ideal son I should be for her. Especially, for the past three years, I had done nothing but disappoint her. Whether it be school or me in general, I knew I had always let her down.
But I didn't know how to do well. After Nana, I just......
"Kou-chan?"
Dragged out of my train of remorse, I looked at Nana who was waving her hand in front of me and looking at me with concern.
"Uh, yeah?"
"You looked sad. What were you thinking?"
"It's nothing." I lied.
Nana sighed. "Is it Miyama-san?"
I flinched. Did she know how to read minds now?
She giggled. "No, but I know how to read Kou-chan just like how Kou-chan reads me."
I scratched my head a bit embarrassed. "Well, I guess that's true."
"Would you like to speak out your thoughts?" She offered smiling.
Even if I denied it, she would get it out of me in no time. So I decided otherwise.
"I was just thinking how I could do something nice for Okaa-san. You know how she's always working so hard for me."
Nana smiled knowingly. "That's just like you, Kou-chan. You're so kind."
I blushed, her sweet tone melting me.
"Not really....."
"Now now. I have an idea. You should cook for her!"
"You mean I should prepare her a hearty meal?"
