The early December air whizzed through the open window of the shared garden-level apartment as Jackie rushed to shut it close.
"This year's weather is ever colder than last year's." Jackie said through a quiver as she walked into the kitchen to see Sienna and Blue rushing to prepare all the food that they needed for the Thanksgiving dinner that the entire group of friends had decided to hold.
By right, they were supposed to celebrate it a week ago, on the fourth Thursday of November. With all of their packed schedules, they had initially decided not to have one. However, as the holiday season started picking up, and with all of them being perceived to be leaving their separate ways when Edenbrook closes in a few months, they wanted to celebrate what could be their last Holiday Season together, in proper.
"You know what they say, when the distance increases, the colder it becomes." Elijah said, wheeling into the kitchen, the aroma of the brewing food whisking him in.
"Who says that?" Blue chuckled, as she stirred the pot of mashed potatoes.
"Me--" Elijah deadpanned, trying to steal a few pumpkin rolls, but Sienna smacked his hand off with the spatula she was holding. "Ow!"
"Hands off." Sienna said warningly. "No touching the food in the name of taste-testing before the rest arrive." she pointed at Elijah, Jackie and Aurora who had just shuffled into the kitchen as well.
"Yes, ma'am." they nodded in response, knowing better then to make the small lady mad.
The three of them headed off to their own rooms to rest till they had to get ready, while Blue and Sienna worked together to get the turkey into the oven. "Has Danny been able to get the evening off?" Blue asked, just as they got the tray into the oven.
"Yes, thankfully." Sienna chuckled, changing the settings of the oven. "After all, he still has not recovered fully and he has been helping Sarah and Marlene take over some of their shifts. They did not really mind taking his for one evening."
Blue nodded with a smile as she got to work on the cranberry sauce. "That's great."
"How about you?" Sienna probed. "Why didn't you invite Dr. Ramsey?"
Blue turned to her with an incredulous look. "I don't know how that would look with the rest of our friends present, and Ethan would certainly not be keen to come over dinner with Bryce out of all people."
Sienna laughed at that. "Bryce sure does love to push his buttons." Her expression turned a little serious as she mulled over a few things. "But honestly, he should not have to celebrate Thanksgiving alone."
"I told him that before." Blue sighed in response. "But he retorted with the fact that he does not celebrate it at all."
"Invite him. He can't say 'No' to you." Sienna pressed.
