31st December 2020.
The date flashed next to the wall clock of Edenbrook's community clinic.
It was New Year's Eve and everyone in the hospital, both staff and patients were very much looking forward to completing whatever they were required to do for that day so that they could go back home to their friends and family, just in time for the countdown to the new year to begin.
Reggie had been kind enough to host a mini New Year's Eve countdown party for just the staff of the hospital, and pretty much everyone was looking forward to it. To his own surprise, even Ethan was looking forward to it. Not for the beginning of a new year specifically as Ethan had always deemed it as a useless celebration for it only meant the change of a date to him. He had always worked through midnight for the past few years as he had no one to celebrate with.
However this year, he had Blue.
Ethan strided through the hallways, tending to as many patients as he could when he saw Blue filling out some paperwork at the nurses' station which did not have anyone tending to at that moment. Using that opportunity, Ethan came up to her side, still keeping a respectable distance with her just in case anyone walked past and noticed them.
"Hey." Blue said without looking up for she was already able to sense his presence from the hint of his cologne alone.
"Hey, what time do you end today?" Ethan asked as now all the staff's shifts were flexible with all the major departments being dismantled. He was no longer in charge of the team's schedule, and he wanted to spend the last minutes of the past year with her.
"About 9." Blue replied, looking up to make eye-contact with him for a split-second before dropping her gaze down again when a few interns walked past. "I took the late-morning shift."
Ethan nodded, flipping through the charts he was holding, pretending to look through them. "Are you going to the party at Donahue's after?" he asked her.
"Yep, my friends and I were planning to hold our countdown there. Will you be there too?" Blue questioned him in response, her tone expectant for she wanted to spend the New Year's Eve with him as well.
Ethan picked up his charts again, his hand brushing against hers as he slowly walked past her, not before whispering in her ear, "Yes."

That night, Ethan clocked out of his shift first, changing into a white dress-shirt and a black blazer before heading to the bar where the party was already starting to pick up its pace with all the staff arriving after a whole day of work.
His plan was to brood at the corner of the bar with his usual scotch, but Bryce had managed to whisk him to the darts area, where the rest of Blue's friends were already there, making a ruckus as usual. While waiting for Blue to arrive, Ethan figured that there was no harm in hanging out with the gang for a little.
