It was almost the end of February, with all the sparks of the great holiday season already gradually frizzling off...
Despite that, the early morning air that whizzed in through the open balcony door was cold enough to stir Blue awake.
She woke up, feeling his arms around her before anything else, making her smile sleepily in satisfaction. Despite all the stress and workload at the hospital for the past three months, the feeling of being able to wake up in Ethan's arms after a hard day of work was always the best feeling in the world.
Blue turned in his arms to have a good look at him. Hair tousled, nostrils flared slightly, matching his slow, breathing pattern in his sleep. She snuggled up against him, his bare skin warming her own, igniting the memories of passion just a few hours prior. She leaned forward, pressing her lips to his bearded jaw softly, closing her eyes for a second, silently inhaling and exhaling.
She had never expected for the holidays, from Thanksgiving to Christmas, to New Years, to Valentines Day, to go as well as it did for the both of them as a couple for the first time. It was a mere wonder as to how they had been able to stay a secret, but nonetheless they were glad to have been able to enjoy the festivities with both their close friends and families.
When Blue opened her eyes again, she saw Ethan's eyes slowly fluttering open as well. A smile slid across his face as his aquamarines bore into hers with great intensity even with sleep barred in them.
"Good morning, Sweetheart." Ethan was the first to break the silence, his arms reaching out to tighten around Blue's bare form under the duvet.
"Morning." Blue replied with a smile as her fingers played with his soft chocolate locks.
The first rays of red from the rising sun peeked in through the sheer white curtains of Ethan's bedroom. They moved to the balcony to watch the sunrise, Jenner joining them when he noticed that his favourite humans were awake as well.
The three of them stood there, watching the sunrise in complete silence, but perfect contentment. The rays diverged out into different shades of red, orange, yellow and pink, the sky being used as nature's canvas to mark out the beginning of a new day. As Ethan turned back to look at the brilliant smile on Blue's face, Ethan could not help but feel that she was the one who painted every colour of the rainbow in his heart and life.
From someone who had always been hostile to the idea of celebrating different festivites with others ever since his mother left, Ethan had become someone who had actually started to love the holidays as long as he had Blue, his family and friends to celebrate by his side.
Similarly, Blue had always been reluctant when it came to Christmas due to her brother's passing. However, the way Ethan had opened up to making it a memorable holiday for her, made her feel the love she had for holidays once again.
It had really been a Red Noel, in more ways than one.
However, there was always the fear of waiting for the other shoe to drop when things seem to be going really well. Till then, Blue and Ethan knew that despite it all, with the love that they had between themselves strengthening both them and those around them, they would be able to get through anything.

Thank you all so much for your continous support for this short holiday book even after the mini hiatus that I took. I initially wanted to just include all these in Rookie 2 instead of sticking to the time jump that occured in the original Open Heart 2. But we didnt get any holiday books for OH at all before, and the timing was just right as well, so I made it into a mini holiday book instead. Moreover, these chapters also capture the first few months of Huntsey's relationship and how they have been navigating through it.💖
I had a lot of fun writing these chapters full of fluff, love and family with the angst, drama and plots taking a backseat in this one. I enjoyed making this many holiday-themed moodboards and aesthetics to this book and if you guys noticed, I also named the first word of every chapter after different shades of Red and had tons of fun coming up with the names as well😂🤪.
As said in the last sentence of this epilogue, Rookie 3 is going to be a wild ride ahead, so buckle up, grab some popcorn like Naveen🤣🍿, and be prepared to enjoy the ride😎.
