NUMBER ONE wasn't a bad brother. He watches out for them and tells them what needs to be done as if he was already aware of what their father ought to say. He informs them of their role, taking their abilities into consideration. He's only doing what he believes was for the good of the world and their family, never going out of his way to purposely antagonize anyone.

Number One wasn't a bad brother but that doesn't necessarily mean he was a good one either.

Luther Hargreeves was the good son, the leader, the favorite (as often suggested). Regardless, he was more akin to a lapdog rather than a golden child.

As hard as he tried to be, Luther was in fact, not perfect.

He didn't have his own principles like Diego, wasn't as ambitious as Allison, as fun as Klaus, as well-rounded as Five, as thoughtful as Ben, as perceptive as Eight, or as endearing as Nine for that matter.

If anything, the quality that distinctly distinguished him from the rest was his loyalty.

He was loyal to a fault, always did what he believed was best for them. But after all the years they had spent under their father's reign, most of which always seemed to be aligned with Reginald Hargreeves' ideals.

Luther believes that it was his duty as the leader of the Umbrella Academy. So he follows their father's orders to the best of his abilities, hoses his siblings down, and rounds them up in the way the old man sought.

Perhaps it was that aspect of his that his siblings hated the most, but how else was he supposed to govern over such extraordinary people without that title?

It's for that reason that unlike the rest of his siblings, Luther had just remained as Number One. Nothing more, nothing less, not even worthy for his father to call him by his name.

But for what it's worth, he was only trying to be a good brother—

(Er, tried.)

Now, there's none of them left for him to act like a brother for.

After all, the very same person who coined the title as Number One happened to be the only one left in that lonely old mansion.

He's the only one left who had hope of their father's love, the only one left to complete that stupid mission that permanently changed his body, and consequently, the only one left of the academy for the old man to ship to the moon.
