            NUMBER FIVE was fucking brilliant— undoubtedly arrogant, but nevertheless, brilliant. The boy leaves no stone unturned in his quest for knowledge like a thirst that could not be quenched.

At the age of three, his powers already manifested. At the age of four, he was already speaking another language. At the age of five, he was already reading about theories, concepts, and mathematical formulas.

Curious about the world, he spent his childhood disassembling clocks, observing all his toy trucks, and writing on his walls. He puts in the time to learn, going as far as to read about university-level Physics in order to further understand his powers. It was only a matter of time until he eventually made his own equations, discovering the extent of his ability, and unlocking the skill of time.

Five Hargreeves likes to make sense of things through logic and equations. Unlike emotions and opinions, they were rational; simpler. Every equation constitutes an objective answer that may be derived through various solutions, but they are objective nonetheless.

That being said, the three important variables that are always present in the formula of his life are namely:

1. The Umbrella Academy
2. Number Eight
3. Space and Time

The first attribute accounts for his origin. As determined by fate, it is the important turning point in his life that makes him who he is right then. Number Five's future only branches out to unpredictable probabilities because of this era he faced. This is the most important factor in his identity.

The second variable, on the other hand, is his constant. Not only was Number Eight a thorough source of motivation, but her destiny is quite literally intertwined with his. It had already been determined by pre-existing events in the future that she plays a great role on various occasions of his life. In other words, due to their knotted fate, their actions create a loop of the causation of things. If Number Five had not jumped to the future, Number Eight would not have sought to find him, and in return (spoiler alert), the twins would not have been part of the Umbrella Academy, altering their rates of success at the event of an apocalypse.

Last but not least, the latter is quite literally, his power. It was for that reason why Reginald Hargreeves adopted him, for that reason why he arrived in Armageddon, for that reason why he was constantly on the run to save his family. It can be said that it is due to this ability that he will be burdened with an obligation to prevent numerous apocalypses. However, it is due to the knowledge that he gained from such experiences that he became even aware of such.
