James's POV
"Don't you just love hunting?" Yami asked me as she picked up a huge boar with her bare hands.
"Uh I guess so?" I said while I looked around.
Hunting season was coming up soon and sometimes humans ventured deeper into these woods, close to our territory so we had to be careful.
Usually the pack's patrollers caught onto them before they got deep enough but there are times where people sneak in unnoticed.
"Look, no humans are here. Ever sense you got back you've been super paranoid." She complained before she started to walk back.
I picked up my kills of the day, a beaver and a small elk calve, and headed back with her.
I have been paranoid every sense we came back. Kyle's been getting better slowly and I've been restless. He doesn't know but we never figured out what substance Julian made him take, which is why his body is taking a long time to recover.
Physically he's been eating more and drinking better, but he's been falling asleep and passing out without any warning still. And I'm still upset that Julian is alive somewhere.
The council took him and a lot of his "pack members" away but they wouldn't tell us what they'd do to him. He could be rotting in a cell somewhere, calmly living life in rehab or he could've escaped them.
I can't rest easy until I know for sure there's absolutely no chance of him coming in contact with us again.
"See! You're frowning again. Lighten up yeah? I'll give you some of my personal ice cream when we get back." She whispered the last part, causing me to finally smile.
"There's the smile we're all used to! Kyle will be sad if he knew you were stressing like this in secret. You can't smile in front of him then burden all your worries alone." She told me and I knew she was speaking from her own past experience.
Yami was one of the handful female hunters we had. She was one of the best ones too. She was tall, muscular and had a sleeve tattoo going down her right arm.
She always wore her hair in a braid and her wolf was the same size as Liam's. She was strong, reliable and all of us Hunter's thought of her as our sister.
Her mate was one of our packs cook's, a lean and small man named Charlie who loved to cook anything she brought back. They were perfect for each other. She'd hunt it and he would clean and cook it.
But even though they were always seen happy, she told us one day, that they weren't perfect despite being mates. I started learning that about my relationship with Kyle.
I was raised under the impression that having a mate was easy and the best feeling in the world. In reality it's kind of scary. I love him and if anything were to happen to him, I don't know what would happen to me. It scares me to even think about a world where he doesn't exist. A world where I can't feel his touch, or hear his laugh.
"You're frowning again." Yami stated before she stopped in front of me.
We were about a mile away from the pack house where we were going to drop off our haul's when she stopped me.
"Okay there's only one way to get this frown off your face." She said aloud, more to herself than to me while her back was facing me.
"We're going to race the rest of the way. If I win, I'm going to run all the way to your house and tell Kyle about your worries. If you win, you get my ice cream and bragging rights that you beat the amazing and invincible Yami." She said but before I could process what she was saying, she started counting down.
"Wait Yami, Kyle's in heat and-" I tried to explain to her but she just started counting louder over me on purpose.
"THREE...TWO...ONE!!!" She shouted loudly and we both took off running towards the kitchen's direction.
I don't know why I'm even humoring her but knowing her, it didn't matter if any of us were in heat or rut, once her mind was made up she was going to do what she wanted.
The only way to stop her from seeing Kyle and telling him unnecessary stuff was to beat her in this stupid race. It wouldn't be easy carrying our kills with us and she was already pretty fast to begin with.
"DAMN IT YAMI!" I shouted and she laughed while we ran with all our might.
I blushed and felt embarrassed once other pack members started to look at us curiously and concerned. Some of the pups started laughing at us, which made me even more embarrassed because the sight of us running must've looked silly.
Once the kitchen's back door was in sight I forced myself to run even faster and I beat her by only a few inches.
I dropped my kill's and put my hands on my knees while I tried to catch my breath.
I felt unconditioned and I was now covered in both blood and sweat.
"Uh why were both of you running? We're not going anywhere you know." Charlie said peeking his head out from the kitchen's back door window.
"Do you got the good's daddy?" Yami said making me cringe and Charlie blush.
"Please never say that in public again." He said before holding up two small bowls of ice cream.
"Kyle's lucky he has a mate that worries about him so much." She said before dropping the huge boar she hunted earlier and falling onto the floor, catching her breath.
"Thanks for cheering me up Yami." I told her before I collapsed onto the floor next to her.
We both stared up on at the sky while our backs were on the grass.
"James stop goofing around and get home. It's almost time for my shift and we need to swap Kyle duty. His pheromones are getting stronger and I can't hold out any longer!" Liam mindlinked me, causing me to chuckle.
I sat up quickly and got up off the floor, dusting myself off quickly before I helped Yami up.
"Here. Take it to go." Yami said before she handed me my bowl of ice cream and I took it before giving her a side hug.
"Go wash up." I told her since she was drenched more than I was and she gave me a thumbs up.
"Yeah she better, she's not coming into my kitchen like that." Charlie said before closing the window, making us both laugh.
A/N: Chapter 60 will be the final chapter of this book! Thank you all for the support and love that this book has gotten, it's my longest story I've made and I'm so happy with the results.
