One of the things that I like the most in WH are the backstories of the characters. Today I decided to rank them.
5. Jimmy and Jack
It was just too short and it ended with the most painful and evil cliffhanger. Baby Jimmy – and by that, I mean Jimmy from 7th grade – was pretty cute though.
4. Gerard
I'm sorry to put his this low, I really enjoyed Gerard's backstory, it's just that if we don't count chapter 149, it ended too abruptly as well. I think it was an amazing idea and I really liked the antagonist's actions, Jeongmu is a piece of shit and I have no respect for him, but you gotta admit, he did some extreme stuff that I feel was perfect for this fairly extreme backstory. What I mean by extreme is, have you seen how badass Gerard was? How recklessly he fought? Also, the agent of Sinma is a total bitch. I hope he died in his sleep. The characters in this backstory were pretty lackluster if you ask me. Like yeah, Jinu is alright, but if I haven't read chapter 149, I would've thought that Hyeonjin was a boring asshole and let's be honest, Sangman is really forgettable. I truly enjoyed Gerard's full face and the idea of music, of a band of teenage boys really passioned about making good music. Overall it's definitely not a bad backstory, but I just feel like the other ones are better.
3. Jake
I feel like Jake's backstory is underrated. No one really talks about it and it's sad, because it's so well written in my opinion, and explains a lot of things about the character. First of all, I love his relationship with Kenny, I think it's so sweet! I love how close they are and it's clear that they care about each other a lot. In my opinion, it was so nice to have a backstory about a so-called bad guy, 'cause I said it more times, I don't think I'm able to call Jake an antagonist. To me, it was such a powerful backstory, because it was so short, yet it explained a lot of things about Jake and his relationships not only with his brother, but with Dean as well. I feel like his reason of joining The Union is extremely valid and it felt so good to see him crush the head of Manwol!
2. Alex and Ben
To me, they have by far the best friendship in the entire comic. No other can be at the same level of perfection as this one. I loved their backstory so much! It showed how close the two of them are and how much they love each other. It was so cute yet sad to see Alex beating up so many people just because they said bad things about Ben! Also, Ben being there for Alex at every moment was heartwarming. I was mad when Alex decided to tag along with Sean though and I felt really bad when that bitch just abandoned him like that, but luckily, Big Ben is always there for his Gogo and he fought Jimmy Bae for his buddy. That was a really powerful moment and one which had an impact on the ex head of Gilshin middle school 'till this day. It was also the moment when Ben met Donald Na for the first time, probably the first moment when we, the readers, saw how powerful Donald actually is. The fights in this backstory are insane, but the thing that was and will probably always be the most memorable to me from this, is the strong bond between Alex and Ben. I almost cried when Alex was carrying Ben to the hospital. Also, this is not as important, but baby Alex and baby Ben are just the cutest little things. I wanna hug and protect them.
1. Gray
I read this one on its own for 4 or 5 times until now, I'm that obsessed with it. It's just so good, yet so sad! The characters in this backstory are by far the most memorable: Stephen, for being the perfect little bean that he is; Bryce, for being the piece of shit that he is; Jerry Bang for being the most terrible teacher. There are memorable characters in this one. Also, the story is so sad! It's written so well that, even though we know that we shouldn't get attached to Stephen, because he'll end up on a hospital bed, we still grow to love him with every chapter, and he, while being awake and not in flashbacks, appeared in only 8. I feel like the friendship between Gray and Stephen was developed really well, also I feel like the antagonist of the backstory is a good one because he's despicable. Chapters from 26 to 37 showed not only how far bullyng can go, but also how biased and unfair are people in this world. Gray's backstory is actually the only one in WH that made me cry. I cried my eyes off in chapter 33 at the same time as Gray did.
