He could never understand
What it's like to be a woman,
Living under the boot of a man's
Desire for dominance.
Becoming engulfed, entangled and swallowed whole
Into a life that was never yours.
Only meant to fill a function, a role,
For someone else's ambitions.
Knowing that you've been invited into this union,
Not to walk a road together,
But because you fit neatly into the life he wanted for himself.
You will be set quietly on the shelf,
As a consolation prize.
You will always walk behind him on this road.
Always a few steps behind, never beside.
And that was the lie,
That you were ever anything but expendable.
When will you emerge from these shallow waters
And realize you could only ever be free
Swimming deep at the bottom of the ocean, alone?
