atsumu's pov:
my father was rarely around when he and my mother were married. "he has work" is all my mom would say with a depressed tone to answer the question osamu and i had about why he couldn't watch our volleyball games.
my parents broke up the night before my first day of middle school. no matter how hard my mother tried to keep this family together, nothing worked to keep my father to stay.
when osamu and i watched the door shut from behind the corner, my mother fell to her knees to cry.
the next day was when i first saw y/n.
she was laughing with her parents and brother as she was walked to the gates of our middle school. i felt an absurd feeling in my throat and stomach as i watched y/n hug her father, and walk through the gates with her bright red backpack.
that's when the envy started.
thinking back to middle school, i had a mindset that made me think, "if i beat her in this, it'll prove that i'm better than her," which translates to, "it'll prove that my life is better than hers."
