Sumptuary law- The law created in Elizabethan England Era that stated that no person was allowed to dress above their class structure.

There were three class structures and each class had its own level of authority.

HIGH CLASS - Monarchy-Rulers
                        - Nobility
                        - Gentry-Aristocrats
MIDDLE CLASS - Merchants-salesmen
                            - Yeomen-farmers
LOW CLASS - Peasants-poor

These class structures were everything in the 1500s. You were to obey them or be punished by public beating or worse, death. Everyone knew their place in this structure, they were taught to act accordingly.

So what happens when the son of a Gentry who is about to be appointed to Nobility this summer, falls in "poetic love" with a girl who dresses higher then she herself is worth?
